Abstract:
An electro-magnetic actuator includes a shaft having a first end portion and a second end portion and a nut having an inner peripheral surface and an outer peripheral surface. The inner peripheral surface of the nut is coupled with the first end portion of the shaft. A bearing is disposed around the second end portion of the shaft for rotatably supporting the shaft. An electrical coil is disposed around the shaft between the nut and the bearing for receiving electrical current and producing magnetic flux. A ferromagnetic can is disposed around the shaft having a peripheral surface extending between the shaft and the outer peripheral surface of the nut for establishing a path for magnetic flux flow there between. The peripheral surface of the can is interposed between the electrical coil and the bearing partitioning the electrical oil inside the can and the bearing outside the can.

Abstract:
A viscous clutch includes a rotor, a housing member, a working chamber located between the housing member and the rotor, a reservoir to hold viscous fluid that is configured to rotate with the rotor, a return bore in fluid communication between the working chamber and the reservoir, a first passage from the reservoir to the working chamber, a second passage from the reservoir to the working chamber, and a valve. The second passage is spaced from the first passage, and can extend substantially radially through the rotor. The valve is configured to selectively regulate flow of the viscous fluid through the first passage, and the second passage is unobstructed such that the viscous fluid can pass from the reservoir to the working chamber regardless of the operational state of the valve. Viscous fluid present in the working chamber rotationally couples the rotor and the housing member.
Abstract:
A clutch arrangement (1) for transmitting a drive torque from a drive shaft (2) to a secondary assembly, in particular to a fan wheel (11) of a motor vehicle, comprising a drive shaft (2), an output (10) and a friction disc clutch (12) which can be shifted by means of an electromagnetic arrangement (13). The clutch arrangement (1) comprises, in addition to the friction disc clutch (12) for transmitting torque from the drive shaft (2) to the output (10), a fluid friction clutch (4) whose hydraulic control valve (5) can be actuated by means of the electromagnetic arrangement (13) of the friction disc clutch (12) in order to set the slip.
Abstract:
A valve assembly for a viscous clutch includes an orifice plate defining a bore to allow the passage of a fluid through the orifice plate, a reed valve secured relative to the orifice plate, an armature comprising a magnetic flux-conducting material, an anchor spring secured to the armature, and a stiffening plate. The reed valve includes a tongue configured to selectively cover the bore of the orifice plate, and a first pivot location along the tongue. A second pivot location is defined along the anchor spring at an edge of the stiffening plate. The first and second pivot locations are spaced from each other. The armature is configured to selectively apply a force to the reed valve to pivot at least a portion of the tongue about the first pivot location.
