A re-usable and interchangeable nozzle for delivering cooling gas into the work chamber of a heat treating furnace, provided in the form of any of various keyed tube and mounting base combinations which allows assembly from within the furnace by an axial movement followed by a rotary motion. The preferred embodiment consists of a cylindrical tube made of any suitable material (including but not limited to molybdenum, graphite, or ceramic) having a keyed slot in its lower end and a matching base made of any suitable material which has a mating pin in it. The base is firmly fixed in place by welding or any suitable means and the tube can be removed from the base without damage by first rotating it then pulling it along its axis.

The cooling occurs as a function of the actual conditions of the charge at a predetermined speed, and a uniform distribution of temperature within the charge is assured. For this purpose, the temperature distribution in the charge is measured by temperature sensors, and the intensity and/or direction of the flow of the cooling gas can be changed if deviations from the predetermined theoretical values occur. The wall of the closed treatment chamber of the oven equipment contains a plurality of gas passages which can either be closed off, or are permeable for gases yet impermeable for heat rays. Cooling gases are conducted through the chamber via control valves. The cooling gas is circulated with the aid of a blower unit along with a gas cooler. A temperature control system based on desired-actual-comparisons operates the control valves and the closure elements of the gas passages.

A method and apparatus for recirculation of atmosphere in a vacuum furnace which comprises a recirculation loop in which there is a low pressure line from the furnace chamber leading to a recirculation pump which pumps the recycled gas at a higher pressure to a high pressure line back into the furnace chamber. A means to analyze the furnace atmosphere is in communication with the high pressure line and signals its measurements of the atmosphere analysis to a valve on an enriching line. The enriching line passes enriched gas into either the high pressure line or the furnace chamber as the valve opens or closes. A means is provided to withdraw the gas from the furnace chamber in order to maintain the desired furnace chamber pressure as enriching gas is added.
