A method and an apparatus for manufacturing of cement includes cement raw meal being preheated in a preheater, calcined in a calciner by contact with hot gases which are introduced into the calciner via a gas inlet and being diverted from the calciner via a gas outlet, and where calcined cement raw meal is diverted from the calciner, burned into cement clinker in a kiln and subsequently cooled in a clinker cooler. At least a portion of the calcined cement raw meal diverted from the calciner is heated further in a separate system to a temperature which exceeds the calcination temperature and is subsequently recirculated to the calciner. That at least a portion of the gases which are diverted via the gas outlet of the calciner is removed from the plant with a view to storage underground or other additional treatment.

A major portion of raw material converted into clinker in a rotary tubular kiln is preheated by hot gases recovered from the kiln. The clinker is cooled in a cooler to which fresh air is delivered. The fresh air is heated in heat exchange contact with the clinker and fresh air thus heated to a temperature of 900.degree. C. to 1000.degree. C. is removed from the cooler and brought into heat exchange contact with a minor fraction of the raw material, thus at least partially calcining the raw material fraction and simultaneously cooling the air. The at least partially calcined raw material fraction is introduced into the kiln and at least a portion of the cooled air is delivered with the fresh air to the clinker.

Described is a method as well as a plant for the simultaneous production of electricity and cement clinker by which method cement raw meal is calcined in a calciner (4) subject to simultaneous supply of fuel and combustion air and subsequently burned into cement clinker in a kiln (5), and where some of the heat contained in the exhaust gases from the calciner (4) is utilized to generate electricity by means of a boiler section (18). The method and plant are peculiar in that the combustion air supplied to the calciner (4) does not contain alkali or chloride, and in that the temperature of the exhaust gases used to generate electricity is at least 500° C.Coating formations formed on the boiler tubes due to the condensation of alkali and chloride vapours can be avoided, while, at the same time, the efficiency with which thermal energy can be converted into electrical energy can be increased.

A method and mechanism for heat treating a pulverulent comminuted raw material in the process of making cement including preheating the material, passing the material through a first reaction zone, supplying a first fuel supply to the first zone for supplying thermal energy for carrying out the calcination reaction, separating the material from the hot gases received from the first reaction zone and delivering the material to a second reaction zone to which is supplied a second fuel supply for supplying thermal energy for the calcination reaction in the second zone and separating the material from the hot gases from the second zone and delivering the material to a sintering kiln and then passing it to a cooler with the air from the cooler supplied to support combustion in the first zone, and with the arrangement preferably arranged in two parallel flows with each flow path containing the preheater, and the reaction zones and separators with the material flows combining just as they enter the sintering zone.
