摘要: A sea water pressure regulator valve is provided for a fuel tank, the valvencluding an elongated body having a longitudinal cylindrical hole which opens into the fuel tank and a perpendicular passageway which is adapted to open the cylindrical hole to sea water. A piston is slidably mounted in the cylindrical hole with an O-ring on each side of the perpendicular passageway so as to render the movement of the piston independent of sea water pressure. The piston has a longitudinal passageway throughout its entire length so as to be open into the fuel tank at a downstream end and open into the bottom of the cylindrical hole at an upstream end. The piston has at least one aperture adjacent a perpendicular passageway for variably opening the pistons longitudinal passageway to sea water so that sea water will flow from the perpendicular passageway into the pistons longitudinal passageway and out the downstream end of the piston into the fuel tank. A spring biases a piston downstream to open the aperture with respect to the perpendicular passageway. With this arrangement the strength of the spring and the effective areas of the upstream and downstream ends of the piston will cause a predetermined pressure in the fuel tank as the fuel is used regardless of the pressure of the sea water.

摘要: A closed-loop cooling system is provided for a hydrogen/oxygen based combustor. A combustion reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in the combustor produces steam. The steam is used to generate work from a turbine shaft, which is used to drive a propulsion system for the underwater vessel. After the steam passes through the turbine, the steam is cooled back to liquid water by a condenser that uses a seawater cooling loop to cool the steam into cold water. The cold water is then injected into the combustor, and pumped into passages along the walls of the combustor, thus absorbing the heat. The cold water absorbs this heat until it becomes hot water or steam, which is then injected into the combustor with the hydrogen and oxygen to act as a diluent, thus reducing the reaction temperature of the hydrogen/oxygen combustion reaction. The reaction produces more steam, and the cycle repeats.

摘要: A vehicle for self-propelled travel through a body of water includes a hull, a propulsive element for engaging the water, an engine, and a fuel storage container. The engine includes a combustion chamber for receiving a monopropellant fuel and combusting the monopropellant fuel to form an energized gas. The engine includes responsive elements for drawing energy from expansion of the energized gas. The responsive elements are coupled to the propulsive element to drive the propulsive element. A fuel flow path extends from the container upstream to the combustion chamber downstream. A pump system pumps the fuel from the container. A port draws water from the body of water through the hull in at least a first mode of operation. A water flow path extends from the port upstream to the combustion chamber downstream in at least the first mode of operation.

摘要: A heat regenerative external combustion engine is disclosed herein. The ene includes fuel inlet means which extends along the exhaust passage and/or combustion chamber in order to preheat the fuel. To provide for preheating by gases in both the combustion chamber and the exhaust passage, the combustion chamber is arranged annularly around the drive shaft and between the cylinders. This configuration also is advantageous in that it reduces the noise of combustion. The engine of the invention is particularly well-suited for use in a torpedo.

摘要: A LIQUID-FUEL PROPULSION SYSTEM USED IN A TORPEDO FOR DRIVING A HOT GAS ENGINE. A CHARGE OF SOLID PROPELLANT IS IGNITED IN A COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND SIMULTANEOUSLY COMPRESSED GAS IS RELEASED INTO A FUEL SUPPLY TANK, THEREBY BUILDING UP PRESSURE IN THE TANK. THE COMBUSTION OF THE SOLID PROPELLANT PRODUCES AN INITIAL QUANTITY OF HOT GASES WHICH PRESSURIZE THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND DRIVE A HOT GAS ENGINE WHICH, IN TURN, DRIVES A FUEL PUMP. A PRESSURE-CONTROLLED CHECK VALVE COMMUNICATING WITH THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER OPENS AFTER THE PRESSURE AND TEMPERACHAMBER HAS BUILT UP TO A REQUIRED PREDETERMINED VALUE, WHEREUPON LIQUID FUEL, CAPABLE OF BURNING ONLY WHEN SUBJECTED TO A CERTAIN MINIMUM PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE, IS CAUSED TO FLOW FROM THE PRESSURIZED FUEL TANK, THROUGH THE CHECK VALVE AND FUEL PUMP AND INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER WHERE IT IGNITES, BURNS, AND CONTINUES TO SUPPLY COMMUNICATING PRESSURE TO THE PRESSURECONTROLLED CHECK VALVE.
