The invention comprises a modem apparatus adapted to provide full messaging and communications interface between a control device and a communications medium such as a telephone line. The modem can comprise an interface adapted to communicate directly with a control system device, such as a programmable logic controller (PLC), using a communications protocol compatible with the normal network communications used in a distributed control system. The apparatus advantageously interfaces directly with unmodified control system devices, providing the ability to send and receive messages from remote devices or personnel via a communications medium. The invention also comprises a control system including a modem device providing full communications between a control device and remote personnel and/or devices. The apparatus can further be operative to monitor certain control conditions via communications with the control device, and to create and transmit messages across a communications medium according to the monitored control conditions.

The invention is aimed at providing a programmable logic control system capable of executing a plurality of functions to realize high-speed data communication between itself and a control input/output unit without degrading the performance of the programmable logic control system, thereby significantly enhancing the performance and simplifying maintenance. To attain the aim, the programmable logic control system comprises a plurality of separate modules obtained by grouping the operating sections and the input/output sections of the controllers in the form of separate modules, and mounted on a back board. On the back board, there is also provided a control input/output unit connector. A signal is used for the control input/output unit connector connected parallel to the separate modules via the back board, so that communication can be performed, during use of a bus, between the separate modules and the control input/output unit.

A bus arbitration scheme and a message handling technique are disclosed to tightly couple the functional modules together to form an efficient programmable controller. A programmable controller includes four remotely located input/output interface racks which are connected by cables to an I/O scanner circuit which is centrally located with the controller processor and memory. Input and output data is serially transmitted between the I/O scanner circuit and the interface racks, and fault processors are located in both the I/O scanner circuit and the interface racks to monitor the operation. The fault processors include fault tolerant detector circuits which ignore erroneous transmissions caused by industrial noise, but which initiate a shutdown process when malfunctions occur. The shutdown process is controlled by a programmable disabling circuit which is responsive to program instructions stored in the controller memory to allow independent, quasi-independent, or dependent operation of the machines connected to each of the four interface racks.
