A control system suitable for control of an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine having a plurality of objects to be controlled. This system comprises a plurality of control units to individually and independently control those objects to be controlled, a monitor control unit to monitor those control units, and a system bus which is commonly connected to the control units and monitor control unit. The control units time-sharingly and cyclically execute their control operations by time-sharingly occupying the system bus one by one. The monitor control unit operates in parallel with the control units. The control units and monitor control unit are formed on the same semiconductor substrate consisting of, for example, Si or GaAs. The system bus may be a LAN bus or an optical fiber. With this control system, each control unit can execute its own control operation irrespective of an interruption request, so that the processing program procedure is simplified and a reliability of control is also improved.

A read-only sequence controller has a master circuit mounted on a housing and having a first presettable counter for producing an instruction pulse, and a slave circuit having a second presettable counter for setting a cycle, and a pules the generating circuit for producing a plurality of pulses at the cycle in response to the instruction pulse from the master circuit. An EPROM is provided for storing a machine operating program data and for producing a program data in response to the pulses fed from the slave circuit. There is provided a plurality of output relays operated in accordance with the program data fed from the EPROM, and a plurality of terminal connected to the relays. The output terminals are arranged in two rows at one of sides of the housing.

A central controller for use in a semiconductor manufacturing equipment integrates a plurality of controllers with an open architecture allowing real-time communication between the various control loops. The central controller includes at least one central processing unit (CPU) executing high level input output (i/o) and control algorithms and at least one integrated i/o controller providing integrated interface to sensors and control hardware. The integrated i/o controller performs basic i/o and low level control functions and communicates with the CPU through a bus to perform or enable controls of various subsystems of the semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
