Techniques are disclosed for automatic detection of dense ornamentation in music. Input data representing a piece of digitally encoded music in a time domain is converted into a spectrogram representing time-frequency coefficients in a frequency domain. The spectrogram includes column vectors of the time-frequency coefficients that correspond to time periods spanning different portions of the piece of music. A one-dimensional onset detection array is calculated based on a subset of the column vectors. Using the spectrogram and the onset detection array, a two-dimensional self-similarity matrix (SSM) is calculated based on pair-wise comparisons of elements in the onset detection array. As a result, an irregular pattern score representing the presence of dense ornamentation in the piece of music can be calculated based on a magnitude difference between a beat pattern in the music and each column of the slim SSM.

When one of the combination-algorithms or the combination-data is selected, effect-algorithms included in the selected combination-algorithm or combination-data are selectively read out from the memory. A program for applying effects in a predetermined combination and order is written by CPU based on the read out effect-algorithms and combination-algorithm or combination-data. Receiving the program, DSP successively applies effects to the input audio signal in accordance with the program. As a result, the present effector needs less memory capacity than the conventional effector in which a number of programs consisting of combinations of effect-algorithms are previously stored. A multi-effector comprised of a connection of a digital effect adding device and an analog effect adding device, is provided with a memory having a plurality of memory areas for storing audio signals. An input audio signal, an input signal to the analog effect adding device and an output signal of the digital effect adding device are stored in respective memory areas of the memory. An apparatus for looping or data-compressing sampled waveform data digitized from musical sound signals (or the like) to produce sound source data, recording the sound source data on a storage medium, and reading out the sound source data from the storage medium for reproduction. To eliminate amplitude discontinuities at repetition points during looping, two connection samples of repetitive waveform portions having values closest to each other are selected from actual samples and interpolated samples. An interpolation filter performs multiple oversampling to produce the interpolated samples. The interpolation filter includes a filter for each degree of oversampling, and all the filters have the same amplitude characteristics. By asserting pulse code modulated data at the beginning portion of a looping domain, adverse compression effects can be avoided without the necessity of providing compression parameters. When reading out sound source data from the storage medium, a data start address and a looping start address are loaded, in that order, into an address generator. A discriminating flag indicating the presence or absence of the looping domain and a discriminating flag indicating the end of the sound source data can be included in the sound source data to facilitate control of looping or end of reproduction.
