摘要： A transducer position sensing system, in a electromechanical drive, for determining transducer position. A sensor is mounted with a non-adjustable position and without absolute position accuracy, thereby lowering manufacturing costs. The position of the transducer at which the sensor switches states is accurately determined in a manufacturing test fixture and recorded in a permanent memory used by a drive controller. The drive controller can then accurately determine transducer position during subsequent initialization procedures.

摘要： A magnetic tape drive has a magnetic head, a magnetic tape medium, and a servo controller. The magnetic head has N servo readers and a plurality of transducing heads for transducing with separate data tracks in each range. The magnetic tape medium is proximate the magnetic head, and has first and second servo tracks and 2N-1 ranges. Each range has a plurality of parallel data tracks. The servo controller, which is responsive to servo read signals produced by two of the servo readers, positions the magnetic head so that the plurality of transducing heads transduce with one of the 2N-1 ranges. Servo read signals produced by one of the N servo readers reading from the first servo track and a different one of the N servo readers reading from the second servo track define one range, while servo read signals produced by two servo readers reading from one of the first and the second servo tracks define 2(N-1) of the ranges.

摘要： A data storage-playback apparatus includes a head for storing and playing data which is movable on the data storage media. A guide rail guides the head along a predetermined direction of the data storage media. The guide rail is composed of a ferromagnetic substance and passes through a coil. The coil is fixed to the head. A yoke is magnetically connected with the guide rail. A permanent magnet is fixed to the yoke and oriented with a magnetic direction aligned toward a curved surface of the coil. A length of the permanent magnet along the magnetic direction is larger than a height of the permanent magnet along a direction perpendicular to both the magnetic direction and a length direction of the guide rail.

摘要： Methods and apparatus for reducing electrostatic discharge damage to a read/write (R/W) head attached to a shutter/head assembly are disclosed. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a shutter/head assembly includes a lead screw, a head housing, and a shutter. The head assembly is configured to be coupled to a R/W head, and is rotatably coupled with the lead screw. The shutter is also rotatably coupled to the lead screw, but in such a manner that the shutter is able to rotate independently of the head housing. The shutter is also configured in such a manner so that it rotates to a radial position between the R/W head and the tape/leader ribbon when the lead screw brings the shutter toward a certain linear position, and rotates to another radial position away from the R/W head and the tape/leader ribbon when the lead screw brings the shutter toward a different linear position.
