    摘要: An apparatus comprises a spindle to rotate a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic field generator to expose a track of the medium to a DC magnetic field. The magnetic field generator is configured to saturate the track during an erase mode and reverse the DC magnetic field impinging the track during a writing mode. A laser arrangement heats the track during the erase mode and, during the writing mode, heats the track while the track is exposed to the reversed DC magnetic field so as to write a magnetic pattern thereon. A reader reads the magnetic pattern and generates a read signal. A processor is coupled to the reader and configured to measure one or more magnetic properties of the track using the read signal. The apparatus can further comprise a Kerr sensor that generates a Kerr signal using the magnetic pattern.

    摘要: An HGA loader provides HGAs, in succession, to a multiple workstation head tester. An HGAs carrier station receives HGAs to be tested. An alignment station on the base includes an alignment surface which selectively rotates about an alignment axis. A camera generates images of an HGA on the alignment surface, which is rotated so that the HGA has a desired spatial orientation which is maintained as the HGA is transferred to an HGA testing workstation. A received, oriented HGA is positioned to enable read/write test operations on a disk rotating on an adjacent spinstand. To effect the successive position operations, a transporter includes a track overlying the workstations, and a carriage movable along the track, to pass from workstation to workstations. The loader is automatically operative under the control of a controller.

    摘要: The present disclosure generally relates to a HAMR head and techniques and apparatus for HAMR writer pole length characterization. One or more bits may be magnetically written on a disk using a leading edge of the writer pole at a first polarity. The disk may be moved under a body of the writer pole to magnetically write the one or more bits in the disk at a second polarity that is opposite to the first polarity to generate a feedback pulse having a signal amplitude. The signal amplitude of the feedback pulse may be measured as a function of writing frequency. A first effective length of the writer pole may be determined based on the measurements.

    摘要: A system detects adjacent track interference (ATI)/far track interference (FTI) in a data storage system. The system includes a micro-transition generator that introduces micro-transitions into data write patterns written to a magnetic media. A spectrum analyzer analyzes in the frequency domain read-back signals generated in response to the data write patterns. In particular, the spectrum analyzer calculates first and second signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) based on read-back signals generated before and after a center track stress test. Adjacent track interference/far track interference effects are determined based on the first and second SNR values.

    摘要: The application discloses a sensor device to measure friction force at a head-media interface. As disclosed, the sensor device has a transducer element oriented to provide an electrical output responsive to force or strain imparted to the transducer element along an in-plane axis. Sensor circuitry is coupled to the transducer element to process the electrical output to provide an output measure of friction force. In illustrated embodiments, the head includes an actuator element which is powered on/off at an on/off frequency to cyclically protrude a localized portion of the head. The on/off frequency of the actuator is used by the sensor circuitry to detect excitation of the sensor device due to friction force at the head-media interface.

    摘要: An apparatus for receiving and positioning a read/write head to a disk and related methods are disclosed. The apparatus includes: a deck; a spindle on the deck; a safety enclosure surrounding at least the spindle; and a movable carriage having at least one head receiving portion. The carriage is movable between a first position wherein the head receiving portion is outside the safety enclosure and a second position wherein the head receiving portion is inside the safety enclosure. The apparatus further includes an automated mechanism arranged to pick up the head from the head receiving portion when in the second position and to load the head to the disk for testing.

    摘要: A method to compensate for spacing variations between a dynamic fly height (DFH) controlled read/write head and a rotating disk surface. Using a HDI sensor or equivalent indicator of touchdowns, a power profile is calculated for an arbitrary track on a disk. The profile tracks disk topography by recording touchdown power at each of a series of sectors into which the track is subdivided. The resulting power profile, smoothed and expressed as a function of sector position, substitutes for the usual constant TD power setting that provides only an uncompensated range of spacing variations. A fixed back-off spacing power is added to the power profile enabling the head to fly over the track at a constant spacing. The power profile can be calculated to account for various temperature and pressure conditions.
