    摘要: A high temperature rechargeable electrochemical cell comprises a housing in the form of a canister which is polygonal in cross-section so that it has a plurality of peripherally spaced corners. A solid electrolyte separator which is a conductor of sodium ions, separates the interior of the housing into an anode compartment containing an anode and a cathode compartment containing a cathode. The separator is tubular or cup-shaped, having a closed end and an open end, and having a plurality of peripherally spaced radially outwardly projecting ribs or lobes corresponding in number to the corners of the housing. The separator is concentrically located in the housing, with each lobe of the separator being peripherally aligned with, and projecting towards, one of said corners of the housing. Anchoring components anchoring the separator in position relative to the housing, are provided. The anchoring component comprises a first portion spanning a gap between the housing and the separator, between a pair of lobes of the separator, and a second portion protruding from the first portion and engaging a surface of a lobe of the separator. Sodium is provided as active anode material in the anode compartment, with the cell having an operating temperature at which the sodium is molten, while active cathode material is provided in the cathode compartment.

    摘要: A cathode composition is described that includes a first element selected from nickel or cobalt; a second element M selected from iron or cobalt, wherein said second element M is contained within a sulfide composition MxSy, wherein the ratio of x and y is between 0.5:1 and 1.5:1; at least one first alkali metal halide; and an electrolyte salt comprising a second alkali metal halide and a metal halide, wherein the electrolyte salt has a melting point in a range from about 150° C. to about 300° C. The molar ratio of the first element to the sulfur of the sulfide composition is between 1.5:1 and 50:1. An energy storage device comprising the cathode composition is also disclosed.

    摘要: A high temperature rechargeable electrochemical cell which comprises a housing containing an anode separated from a cathode by a solid electrolyte separator. The separator is a hollow operatively upright electrode holder defined, in cross-section, by a plurality of peripherally spaced radially outwardly projecting lobes. The operatively lower end of the electrode holder is closed off and the electrode holder has at its operatively upper end a closure having an opening smaller than its cross-sectional dimension. A metallic current collector is disposed in said electrode holder. The current collector is inserted, in a first inoperative configuration, into the electrode holder through the closure opening, and thereafter extended into the lobes of the electrode holder, so that it assumes a second operative configuration in which it has a shape of larger cross-section than the opening.

    摘要: The invention provides a method of making a flattened solid electrolyte, e.g. .beta.-alumina, envelope for use as an electrode holder in an electrochemical cell. A mouldable mixture of the .beta.-alumina with a binder is formed into sheet material and two panels of the sheet material are joined together along their peripheral edges to form the envelope. Spacing and reinforcing means is provided between the panels to space them apart and to reinforce the envelope. The edges of the panels are joined together using pressure, heat and/or solvent, after which are envelope is heated to cure the binder, volatilize the cured binder and sinter the solid electrolyte.

    摘要: In a sodium-sulphur battery cell, an extended surface area current collector is sandwiched between portions of solid electrolyte, also of extended surface area, which provide between them a space for the liquid sulphur. The spacing between the current collector and each of the portions does not exceed the maximum distance that the sodium ions can diffuse in the liquid sulphur during a specified recharge time. A plurality of portions defining a plurality of spaces for the liquid sulphur may be provided, each space having an extended surface area current collector sandwiched between the portions defining the space.A plurality of these battery cells may be arranged so that they are separated one from another by a bipolar electrode to provide a series connection.
