A microwave heating device includes a variable frequency microwave power supply, a waveguide launcher, and a fixture to contain a material to be heated, with the fixture located directly adjacent to the end of the launcher. All heating occurs in the near-field region. This condition may be insured by keeping the thickness of the fixture or workpiece under one wavelength (at all microwave frequencies being used). The launcher is preferably a horn or waveguide configured to apply the microwave power to a small area to perform spot curing or repair operations involving adhesives and composites. The spot curing may secure components in place for further handling, after which a thermal or oven treatment will cure the remaining adhesive to develop adequate strength for service.A related method is also disclosed.

A short ridge waveguide load is described which absorbs and cancels non-radiated electromagnetic energy in continuous slot or discrete slotted antennas. The load achieves a small physical size by using a resonant structure which includes an absorbing ferrite front section positioned within the interior of the waveguide antenna below the slot and a back section of ferrite material also positioned in the interior of the waveguide antenna. This allows for energy to be radiated from the slot while absorbing and canceling the non-radiated energy using a relatively small size load. In a rectangular ridge waveguide configuration, the front section consists of a pair of posts having a trapezoidal, rectangular or triangular shape.

A resonant waveguide load structure is provided for use in waveguide systems. The load structure includes a length of waveguide which is open at one end and closed at the other end. The load structure also includes a support pin mounted inside the waveguide near the closed end thereof. The load structure further includes a resonant body mounted on the support pin. The load structure also includes at least one spacer member mounted on the support pin for maintaining the position of the resonant body. This load structure may be combined with a waveguide circulator to provide a novel waveguide equalizer apparatus.
