    摘要: A method for stabilizing a plasma is disclosed. The method includes (a) providing in an ionization chamber a number of high voltage wires and a gas suitable for forming a plasma, and (b) exposing the gas to a high voltage thereby igniting the gas to form the plasma. Upon ignition, the plasma is subjected to an amount of light. A use of the method to generate X-rays is also disclosed. The invention is further directed to an ionization chamber including (a) a gas suitable for forming a plasma, and (b) a number of high voltage wires for exposing the gas to a high voltage thereby igniting the gas to form the plasma. The ionization chamber includes a device for subjecting the plasma upon ignition to an amount of light. The invention relates to an X-ray generator including such ionization chamber and to a laser apparatus including such X-ray generator.

    摘要: An efficient recombination laser comprises a resonant laser cavity, a gaseous laser material disposed in the cavity, and means for providing a plasma discharge in said laser material, which plasma discharge is confined to a cylindrical region along the axis of the laser cavity. The plasma in the gaseous laser material expands outward radially from the cylindrical region at the axis of the cavity and cools by interacting with the adjacent unexcited gas. The maximum laser gain is provided in an annular region, which annular region is adjacent to and surrounds the initial discharge cylindrical region. In one embodiment of the present invention, the means for providing the plasma discharge comprises two pin-type electrodes which extend into the cavity along the cavity axis.

    摘要: At least two types of preionization systems are provided at a backside of one of a pair of primary electrodes which are disposed in a spaced opposed relation with respect to each other for causing a large area, spatially uniform main discharge in a laser gas therebetween. This improves efficiency and stability in laser oscillations under repeated operations at a high rate of tens to hundreds of shots per second. In addition, without using the laser output power, the preionization timing is controlled such that an optimal preionization timing is realized. The optimal preionization timing is determined on the basis of a minimum discharge starting voltage between the primary electrodes or a minimum required time from the time of applying a high voltage between said first and second primary electrodes until the time the main discharge commences.

    摘要: An ultraviolet preionizer for high power gas lasers. The preionizer is a spark gap array or groups of arrays adapted to be fired preceeding the main discharge pulse of the laser. A fast energy dump to the spark array results in efficient ultraviolet light production. The spark gaps of an array are automatically fired in sequence providing a series current path through the gaps to dump the energy, while providing an electrical glow discharge at each gap for ultraviolet emission.

    摘要: In a gas discharge device having a gas discharge channel, which comprises two gas discharge electrodes and a gas discharge volume lying between said electrodes, having an energy storage circuit connected by a switching device to the gas discharge electrodes for producing a current surge flowing between a first output terminal and a second output terminal for operating a gas discharge, and having an ignition device for separate ignition of the gas discharge, in order to improve said device in such a way that it operates better and more reliably, it is proposed that the switching device comprises a voltage divider lying between the output terminals and comprising a first and a second impedance, that the gas discharge electrodes are connected in parallel to the first impedance and a spark gap is connected in parallel to the second impedance, that the first impedance is so dimensioned that, in the absence of a gas discharge, a voltage lying below the breakdown voltage of the gas discharge electrodes is applied to the latter, and that the spark gap is so designed that its breakdown voltage is exceeded after separate ignition of the gas discharge and so the current surge flows from the energy storage circuit through the spark gap to the gas discharge electrodes.

    摘要: A discharge device (10) is disclosed which is capable of providing preionizing ultraviolet wave length photons to the area of a gap between the first (15) and second (35) electrodes of the device. The first electrode (15) includes a core (20) of dielectric material, a conductive plate (23) mounted on one surface of the core, and a conductive grid (26) mounted on an opposed surface of the core which faces the second electrode. The application of a negative voltage pulse to the grid (26), while the plate (23) is maintained at substantially ground potential, causes electrons to discharge between the conductors of the grid and the adjacent surface of the dielectric core, and, in doing so, generates photons having wavelengths in the ultraviolet range. The ultraviolet photons, which are emanated in a two dimensionally uniform pattern over the surface of the dielectric core adjacent the grid, cause ionization of the gas within the main discharge gap between the first and second electrodes. The second electrode may be maintained at ground or other potential higher than the grid such that a sufficient potential difference reached between the second electrode and the grid after the preionization will result in a uniform glow discharge of electrons between the two electrodes. This glow discharge is useful for the firing of gas lasers and in certain chemical reactors, such as ozone generators.
