A reflective array surface acoustic wave signal compressor or expander (RAC) has a piezoelectric substrate (LiNbO.sub.3) upon which is deposited an input transducer and an output transducer and etched therein a reflective grating. The RAC grating comprises reflective elements which includes a plurality of grooves having either uniform depths and lengths and preselected widths or uniform depths, lengths and widths for producing a flat pass band or a desired frequency characteristic. Yields are increased owing to the simplified fabrication process and costs decreased owing to batch fabrication made possible by the resulting simplified fabrication-process.

A device for handling surface elastic waves using a plurality of reflective elements, such as grooves, on the surface thereof the dimensional characteristics of which may be arranged to vary in a predetermined manner from element to element to provide a bandpass filtering action on a surface wave reflected therefrom. The device may be formed in various configurations using single or double reflections to provide single or multiple filtering action or phase coded filter action and the orientation of the reflective elements may be varied to vary the center frequency of the filter. A further embodiment uses a compensating strip of material positioned in the propagating path of a surface wave, the dimensional characteristics of such strip being arranged to vary so as to change the velocity of the wave and to achieve phase error compensation thereby. Further, a strip of energy absorbing material may also be used to control the amplitude response of the filter.

A phase and amplitude compensated surface acoustic wave (SAW) structure is described in which computer controlled compensation is achieved by laser chemical etching of selective portions of a compound chemical film deposited on the surface of a piezoelectric SAW substrate in the path of propagation. The compound film comprises a layer of amplitude attenuating cermet material formed on the substrate and a phase compensating layer of molybdenum formed over the cermet material and in contact with the substrate surface.

A surface acoustic wave device comprises a piezoelectric substrate which carries input and output transducers for launching and receiving surface acoustic waves on the substrate, one or more reflective arrays for reflecting surface acoustic waves between the two transducers, wherein at least one array comprises numerous spaced reflecting elements of varying lengths arranged in two sets, one set being angled to reflect surface acoustic wave in one direction while the other set is angled to reflect surface acoustic wave in another direction. Varying the lengths of the reflecting elements provides weighting of signals passing through the device. Additionally pulse compression and expansion may be arranged with or without frequency dispersion.
