A shaft angle encoder comprises a code disc (21) mountable coaxially upon a rotary shaft (20) whose angular position is to be continuously measured. Coarse-bit angular position data are encoded digitally in Gray code by a pattern of opaque and transparent sectors provided on a plurality of inner annular tracks on the code disc (21). Fine-bit angular position data are encoded in analog triangular waveforms generated by the outermost annular track on the code disc (21). The analog position data are converted to fine-bit digital values, which are combined with coarse-bit digital values to obtain an angular position measurement. Alignment of the fine-bit digital values with the coarse-bit digital values obtained from the Gray code position data is accomplished by using information provided by overlapping the least significant bit of the coarse-bit digital values with the most significant bit of the fine-code digital values.

The angular displacement of a shaft 43 (Fig. 1A) is digitized by means of movable transformer elements rotating with the shaft. a resolver measuring the coarse position and an " Inductosyn " (Registered Trade Mark) measuring the fine position. The phase modulated sine wave output from the Inductosyn is applied to a zero cross detector 52 to give a time differentiated output pulse to inhibit a fine gate 56 from counting clock pulses. The output from the fine gate is fed to a fine counter 65. In a similar way the output from the resolver 22 is applied to a zero cross detector 53 to inhibit the gate 57, through which pulses from a coarse clock have been sent to a coarse counter 66. The outputs from the counters may be used to illuminate a display 81. In addition the output from the fine counter is applied to a digital to analogue converter 74 the output from which is used to bias the coarse zero crossing detector 53 to retard the advance of the coarse stop pulse until the Inductosyn cycle is completed.

The rotation type absolute encoder of the present invention is constituted by a magnetic type one-pulse encoder for detecting one or more rotations, and an optical type absolute encoder comprising a plural number of aspheric LED lens as a light source, a group of detecting elements corresponding to the area of the light source, a slit disc beginning from the track of two slits, and a differential input type current-to-voltage convertor. This absolute encoder is also so constructed as to back up the circuit voltage by an external battery and an internal large capacitance capacitor when a current is cut, and has a circuit for serially transmitting a signal indicating the number of rotations and the absolute angle to an external controller, and a circuit for synthesizing and outputting one reference pulse per rotation from the signals of the magnetic type one-pulse encoder and the optical type absolute encoder.
