    摘要: A secondary mechanical seal assembly is used on a shaft that is rotatable within a housing to seal both gaseous and liquid medium. The assembly includes a stationary seal face element that is fixed relative to the housing and a rotating seal face element that is fixed relative to the shaft. One of the seal face element back surfaces includes at least one slot configured to produce a wave on the front surface of the seal face element when the shaft is rotated. The wave creates an opening force that is sufficient to control wear and prolong seal life when the secondary seal assembly is exposed to a gaseous medium. When exposed to a pressurized liquid medium, the hydrodynamic loading from the liquid medium alters the seal face element waviness, and increases the closing force due to the action of the pressurized liquid on the back surface of the seal face elements, such that excessive leakage is prevented.

    摘要: A pressurizing device for a pump seal includes a cylindrical chamber fitted over an extension of a pump shaft external of the seal with a sliding piston inside the chamber being mounted for reciprocation relative to the external shaft portion in dividing the space in the cylinder into high pressure and low pressure chambers with the high pressure chamber communicating with the seal. A screw pump consisting of a pumping thread on the shaft is positioned in a bore axially extending through the piston with rotation of the shaft effecting pumping through a check valve to the high pressure chamber from the low pressure chamber so as to cause the piston to move toward the low pressure chamber and compress a compression spring mounted in the low pressure chamber. The compression spring urges the piston toward the high pressure chamber so as to always maintain high pressure in the high pressure chamber after the pump operation and consequent rotation of the shaft is terminated. Pressure relief valve means vents the high pressure chamber to the low pressure chamber when pressures reach a predetermined value in the high pressure chamber.

    摘要: A shaft seal is presented which combines the attributes of the low pressureealing of an O-ring and the high pressure sealing of a carbon face seal. This invention provides a dynamic shaft seal with the advantage of a very reliable, positive elastomeric O-ring seal for low pressure sealing and the advantage of a reliable graphite face seal for high pressure sealing incorporated into an integral configuration. This integral configuration allows a smooth transition between the low pressure O-ring seal and the high pressure carbon face seal without leakage. Springs are designed to provide the correct preload compression on the dynamic O-ring seal and the forces required such that the transition operation occurs at the proper differential pressure.Mechanically, a rotating shaft within an aperture in a pressure housing wall is fitted with a sleeve containing a carbon face seal that mates against the face of an elastomeric/graphite-interface seal. The carbon face seal components are keyed to rotate with the shaft while the elastomeric/graphite-interface seal is keyed to the aperture and remains fixed in place during the shaft's rotation. The elastomeric/graphite-interface seal also houses an O-ring which provides a dynamic seal for the shaft at low pressure. Actuation of either the high pressure face type seal or the low pressure O-ring seal is adjustably controlled by compression springs in the mechanism.

    摘要: The invention is an improved rotary seal which is particularly well suited for protecting the bearing area in a conveyor idler roll. The seal has inner and outer annular members which normally rotate freely without contact relative to each other. The members have cooperative means to form a labyrinth effective to restrict the ingress of contaminant or the egress of lubricant to or from the bearing area. One of the members further includes an attached annular disc of resilient flexible material. When the lubricant pressure in the bearing area increases, such as when the bearing is being regreased, it forces the free edge of the disc into contact with the other member to form a barrier against the leakage of lubrication. When the lubricant pressure normalizes, the resilient disc recovers to its normal, noncontact position.

    摘要: A system supplying oil to the seal plates of a generator. Seal oil is provided by a primary pump and a secondary pump which acts as a backup for the primary pump. Under normal operating conditions a portion of the seal oil supplied by either pump is diverted through a bypass line so that only a predetermined amount of oil actually flows to the seal plates. When the flow rate through the bypass line falls below a specific amount, the secondary pump is activated. If, at any time, the oil pressure supplied to the seal plates falls below a predetermined amount, then a hydraulic accumulator maintains the necessary pressure and flow rate for a relatively short period of time required to bring the backup pump to its proper pressure and flow rate.

    摘要: A sealing structure for a system which rotates a driven coupling member in a contaminated compartment has a sleeve which extends into an opening of a wall of the cell defining the contaminated compartment and has an internal annular shoulder sealingly engaging an external shoulder of the driven coupling member in the compartment. The driven coupling member has an axial bore which is sealed from the contaminated compartment and can receive a torque-transmitting part of a second coupling member which is located without the compartment and is driven by a motor through the intermediary of a clutch. The sleeve is in sealing engagement with the wall, and the likelihood of leakage between the sleeve and the driven coupling member is further reduced by the provision of one or more packings, U-rings and/or liquid seals. The two shoulders bear against each other to prevent leakage of contaminating matter from the compartment when the second coupling is detached. The opening in the wall is evacuated prior to detechment of the second coupling member and remains evacuated until after attachment of a fresh second coupling member.

    摘要: There is provided an inflatable peripheral seal which is characterized by a closed loop gas-impervious body of an elastomeric material formed from an extruded section and joined at its ends and having oppositely disposed inner and outer peripheral sealing surfaces. The loop contains at least one interiorly disposed continuous chamber defined in part by a flexible wall which is movable between a first position and a second position in response to fluid pressure. The wall is stable in the first position when the pressure differential across the wall is below a predetermined value. The joint between the ends of the extruded section is free of tensile stresses both when the seal is inflated and deflated. Further, the joint can be made after the seal is positioned around a shaft so that the seal can be installed without moving the seal over the ends of such shaft.
