Abstract:
A nozzle guide vane assembly has ceramic components therein having a conventional thread thereon including a preestablished pitch and having a preestablished rate of thermal expansion. The nozzle guide vane assembly has a metallic components therein having a preestablished rate of thermal expansion being greater that the rate of thermal expansion of the ceramic components is positioned in a gas turbine engine. The metallic component, a nut, has a thread therein including a plurality of crests being spaced on a pitch equal to that of the ceramic component and has a pair of contacting surfaces extending from the plurality of crests. A notch spirally extends intermediate adjacent ones of the plurality of crests and has a preestablished depth which is at least twice the size of the conventional pitch. Furthermore, the pair of contacting surfaces are in contact with only a portion of the threaded surface of the ceramic components.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a compressible screw-type locking mechanism including an oversized locking screw and a tool for compressing and rotatively driving the oversized locking screw through a threaded bore. Formed about the top of the locking screw is a head portion and extending downwardly from the head portion is a threaded shaft. At least one longitudinal slot extends through the head and at least partially through the shaft to form a locking screw with plural resilient segments. The locking screw assumes a normal expanded state with its threaded pitch diameter being oversized with respect to its companion bore. The locking screw is compressed by engaging the head thereof with the tool. In one embodiment, the compression of the locking screw is achieved through a torquing action. In a second embodiment, the compression is achieved by the axial movement of the tool. In either case by relieving the applied torque or removing the tool from the locking screw head results in the locking screw expanding within the bore and assuming an interference or locked fit within the bore.
Abstract:
A washer-nut assembly wherein a sheet metal nut is rotatably coupled within an annular plastic washer. The nut has an inner threaded barrel portion for engaging the threads of a cooperating bolt, an outer barrel portion shaped for engagement by a tightening tool and a frusto-conically shaped skirt portion extending outwardly from the outer barrel portion. The washer includes a central through-aperture and an inboard surface near one end of the washer that defines a seat for the skirt portion of the nut. The axial height of the washer is substantially greater than that of the nut so that the nut is recessed within the washer. The nut is coupled to the washer by skiving material from the inboard surface of the washer to form tongues that overhang the skirt portion of the nut. The tongues retain the nut within the washer yet permit free-spinning of the nut and washer relative to one another.
Abstract:
A sealing nut having a shouldered insert of heat stabilized-lubricated nylon with a protruding crown, locked into a recess provided at one end of the nut body by means of a coined lip engaging the shoulder. Sealing is effected when the nut is engaged on a threaded male member and screwed against a bearing surface through which the male member extends by exterior folding of the crown upon itself and confining the resulting fold within the lip, said lip being brought into metal-to-metal engagement with the bearing surface. The folded crown or turtle-neck-like fold may be partially preformed prior to use to enhance reusability.
Abstract:
An improved method for producing a threaded, metallic, self-locking fastener having a metallic patch flame sprayed thereon. The improved method includes a heat-treating operation which densifies and smooths the outer surface of the patch while not substantially affecting the porosity or resiliency of the patch and improves the bond between the patch and the base fastener.
Abstract:
A tightening and sealing device is made from plastic material and includes two members which can be coupled to each other. The member acting as the tightening element includes an internally threaded hollow cylinder divided into three cylindrical segments by longitudinal and axial slots spaced from each other by 120.degree.. Each segment has extending outwardly from an end thereof and centered between adjacent slots a flexible leg. The legs are joined to the end of an outer body which is concentric with the cylinder and which is internally cylindrical and externally polygonal. The second member which acts as the sealing element is composed of a cap-shaped element having an axial bore and an annular flange dimensioned to fit into a space between the concentric bodies forming the tightening element.
Abstract:
Reusable self-locking fasteners, and methods of metal fasteners wherein the self-locking characteristic is derived from a patch comprising a metal or metal alloy selectively applied to the threaded surface of the metal fastener in a spraying operation. The metallic patch may comprise a single metal or metal alloy or a composite of metals or metal alloys selectively bonded to the threaded surface of the metal fastener by single or multiple molten spraying operations respectively.
Abstract:
A finely powdered thermoplastic material is placed in a fluidizing chamber and is dispensed on a preheated threaded fastener element in controlled amounts by controlled air pulsations which pass through a venturi tube arrangement. The powdered material is deposited on the threaded surface in a predetermined amount and is fused thereto to provide a locking patch of solidified thermoplastic material.
Abstract:
A mounting assembly to be used in securing a lampholder to a fixture panel. The lampholder has a base with spaced legs extending forwardly therefrom and defining a slotted opening therebetween with opposing faces of the legs having recesses which extend lengthwise thereof. A retaining nut extends across said slotted opening with its opposite side edges extending into said recesses. The retaining nut is formed of thin sheet metal and is curved in its lengthwise direction to form a bendable arc-like segment. The arc-like segment, as formed has an overall thickness greater than the width of the recess in the opposing faces of the legs whereby the side edges of the retaining nut are held under compression between opposing surfaces of the recesses when inserted therein. A retaining screw extends into the slotted opening between the legs and engages with a threaded opening in the retaining nut.
