A cylinder head for a reciprocating screw injection molding machine characterized in that it has an integral spreader which transforms a solid cylindrical body of plasticized material into a plurality of streams of progressively decreasing cross-section area which converge to the nozzle orifice, said spreader being hollow and containing a spring which biases a pressure-actuated valve member into engagement with a valve seat around the nozzle orifice located close to the tip of the nozzle whereby, after a short delay following the filling of the mold with plasticized material by stroking of the screw in the injection cylinder, the material freezes in the nozzle orifice so as to constitute a short length and small diameter extension of the mold sprue which is withdrawn from the nozzle orifice when the cylinder and nozzle are retracted away from the mold. The interior of the spreader is communicated with the atmosphere whereby the valve member is automatically opened at desired pressure of the plasticized material acting thereon when the screw is operated as a plunger to inject plastic material into the mold contacted by the nozzle and is automatically closed upon decrease in actuating force on the screw (and resulting decompression of the material in the cylinder) after the mold is filled with plastic material, said valve member remaining in closed position when the nozzle is out of engagement with the mold and during rotation and retraction of the screw.

Giant articles of cellular plastic are molded in injection molding apparatus. Each of a plurality of injection nozzles comprises a bore in which an injection plunger reciprocates between a withdrawn position at which the tip of the injection plunger rests during the brief mold-filling step and an advanced position at which the tip rests during much of the prolonged step of cooling the molded article. As the plunger advances from its withdrawn position, it first acts as a valve to discontinue flow of the plastic into the nozzle bore and then during a principal portion of its advancing stroke, the injection plunger purges the residual cellular plastic between an inlet orifice and the nozzle tip and forces it into the mold. Only in the final stages of the withdrawing stroke does the tip of the injection plunger expose the inlet orifice to open the valve to renew the flow of cellular plastic to the mold. Power means such as a hydraulic cylinder for each injection plunger actuates the reciprocation. The improvement concerns means provided to each injection plunger as soon as it had completed a selected major amount of its withdrawing stroke so that it is temporarily braked at a position near the brink of valve-opening position. Sensors detect and provide signals while an injection plunger is thus braked at a brink of opening position. A simultaneity control system detects the signals and responds as soon as the signals establish that every injection plunger is at such brink of opening position, and then simultaneously releases the brake for each and all of the injection plungers, which then move to the fully withdrawn positions, thereby simultaneously opening all of the valves. More reproducible articles are molded when the plurality of nozzles are reliably opened with improved simultaneity than when the injection plungers withdrawn by the plurality of hydraulic cylinders by a single stage movement.

A nozzle structure is provided for injecting hot wax into a die or mold. The nozzle structure comprises a generally tubular housing, an intermediate portion of which is submerged in a storage reservoir of hot wax with the discharge end of the housing extending beyond the reservoir. The hot wax in the storage reservoir is under pressure and when the nozzle plug is in open position, the hot wax flows directly from the reservoir through the valve in the nozzle plug to fill the die or mold. At the end of the injection operation, the valve plug is moved toward closed position and the present invention facilitates a rapid closing of such valve plug by providing a pressure relief reservoir mounted adjacent the outlet end of the housing and communicating through the housing adjacent the discharge or outlet end thereof in position to receive hot wax propelled by the valve plug near the end of its closing movement.
