A distributed search system includes a central server having an index of data, wherein the index of data is also available on a plurality of computing devices in a distributed computing network, the plurality of computing devices being distinct from the central server, each the computing device having a cache in which the computing device automatically stores data generated during the course of the computing device's access to another computing network distinct from the distributed computing network.

A system and method for enabling a Meta Object Facility (MOF) and a Java Metadata Interface (JMI) compliant service to access program resources. A system includes a metamodel repository and an application server. The metamodel repository is configured to store the program resources including metadata and one or more metamodels. The application server includes at least one application providing a first portion of the program resources. A first portion of the program resources are stored in a database associated with the application server. A second portion of the program resources are provided in at least one application of the application server, and programming language instances of the program resources are received by one or more applications independent of where the program resources are stored or provided.

A data construct called a semcard is a semantic (meaning-based) software object including semantic meta-tags and meta-data that describes a target object or thing. A target object can be any type of digital or physical entity or identifier, or it can be tacit knowledge, such as ideas, concepts, processes or other data existing in a user's mind, provided that the user represents this knowledge in the semcard. A semcard embodies information about its own structure—rules, history, state, policies and goals regarding automation, display, access permissions, sharing and other operations of the semcard and any optional target object. It can also represent a semantic link between two semcards, or a semantically typed link or a standard Web hyperlink between a semcard and its referent target. A collection of semcards represents a knowledge network; single semcards, and knowledge networks, can be browsed, shared, searched, disseminated, manipulated, displayed, organized, and stored.

A distributed computing system conforms to a multi-level, hierarchical organizational model. One or more control nodes provide for the efficient and automated allocation and management of computing functions and resources within the distributed computing system in accordance with the organization model. The model includes four distinct levels: fabric, domains, tiers and nodes that provide for the logical abstraction and containment of the physical components as well as system and service application software of the enterprise. A user, such as a system administrator, interacts with the control nodes to logically define the hierarchical organization of distributed computing system. The control node detects the addition of a node added to the network and automatically identifies attributes for the detected node.

Potentially identical objects (e.g., files) are located across multiple computers based on stochastic partitioning of workload. For each of a plurality of objects stored on a plurality of computers in a network, a portion of object information corresponding to the object is selected. The object information can be generated in a variety of manners (e.g., based on hashing the object, based on characteristics of the object, and so forth). Any of a variety of portions of the object information can be used (e.g., the least significant bits of the object information). A stochastic partitioning process is then used to identify which of the plurality of computers to communicate the object information to for identification of potentially identical objects on the plurality of computers.

A software process receives a command initiating creation of a zone naming policy for automatically generating zone names in a storage area network. During creation of a zone naming policy, the software process receives selection of one or more format elements to be used in the zone naming policy. The one or more format elements each identify which corresponding at least one type of characteristic associated with a given zone in the storage area network shall be used to automatically generate a respective zone name for the given zone. For example, the format elements in a zone policy may identify how to generate a respective zone name using identifiers associated with resources associated with the zone. Accordingly, a network manager can create a zone naming policy for automatically generating zone names in a storage area network rather than having to manually create zone names for each created zone.

A collection of target Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) that are associated with the source EJB in a one-to-many association is obtained in response to traversing the one-to-many association of the source EJB. The collection of target EJBs is registered in a collection registry. The source EJB is passivated without passivating the collection of target EJBs, and the source EJB is later reactivated. The collection of target EJBs that are associated with the source EJB that is reactivated is fetched from the collection registry in response to traversing the one to many association of the source EJB that is reactivated. The one-to-many association between the source EJB and the collection of target EJBs may be managed by a link object that is generated by a link factory.

A system and method for data distribution and recovery, including a server that broadcasts data to a plurality of clients and a means for a client to identify and recover broadcast data that the client missed while it was off line. In a representative embodiment, the system includes a transfer server, a plurality of clients in communication with the transfer server, and an archive in communication with the transfer server and the plurality of clients. The transfer server receives data packets from a data source, uniquely identifies each data packet, and broadcasts the data packets to the plurality of clients and the archive. Each client receives the data broadcast from the transfer server, identifies missing data, and communicates with the archive to recover the missing data.

The invention is directed to techniques for handling a client-oriented request within a data-storage system. Handling of a client-oriented request enables direct communication between a client and the system thus offloading any servers' burden of handling client requests. Furthermore, in some situations, such handling of the client-oriented request within the data storage system enables reduced traffic through the cache of the system, and reduced traffic between the system and external devices. In one arrangement, the data storage system includes a set of ports for connecting to an external host, a cache for buffering data exchanged between the external host and a set of storage devices, and a set of interface circuits including front-end interface circuits interconnected between the cache and the set of ports, and back-end interface circuits interconnected between the cache and the set of storage devices. The interface circuits are configured to receive a client-oriented request from the external host and perform a server-oriented operation in response to the client-oriented request.
