A bladder nests in the cavity with a contoured upper surface inward of the peripheral bonding region of the midsole layer and a contoured lower surface inward of the peripheral bonding region of the sole plate. A method of manufacturing the sole structure is disclosed.

The invention covers both the sole structure and its related production equipment and technology, especially in relation to a type of flocked shoe sole. Compared with the existing technology, the shoe sole can trap and retain fibre particles via electrostatic or electrostatic spraying, which is not only anti-slippery also with elegant looking and reduce the cost. This set of equipment for making flocked sole is highly automatic, easy to operate, save the labour and reduce the production cost. The production procedure consists of 1) applying prime coating; 2) applying adhesive; 3) natural flock retention or electrostatic flocking; 4) electrostatic separation, cleaning, pairing and packaging. The whole process has been shortened dramatically, simplify the procedure, and reduce the cost. Also the solvent and adhesive used are both environmental friendly, harmless, which helps increase the productivity and yield.

A method of constructing an article of footwear having a molded integrated vamp and sole is described. The method comprises molding the integrated vamp and sole with an external cavity formed in an exterior surface of a heel portion of the integrated vamp and sole. A plug is formed for close fit in the cavity. The plug has inner and outer surfaces and a contour side wall. In one embodiment of assembly, a heat reactive glue is applied to a bottom surface of the cavity and the inner surface of the plug, and at least a portion of the heel portion, having the cavity, and the plug are heated whereby to soften the glue to effect a bond between the bottom surface of the cavity and the inner surface of the plug when the plug is placed in the cavity with the inner surface of the plug facing the bottom surface of the cavity. Pressure is applied across the heel portion and the plug to bond the plug in the cavity. In another embodiment of assembly, the plug is glued in the cavity during assembly by applying a glue which is not heat reactive.

For drying coatings of solvent-based adhesive applied to shoe bottoms a through-flow drying apparatus is provided which utilises air at ambient temperature for the constant rate period (i.e. the period during which the surface of the coating is "wet"), and thereafter applies infra-red heating during the falling rate period (i.e. the period when migration of the solvent through the solid adhesive is to be achieved). In the first stage, jets of air are directed against the shoe bottom at a velocity of not less than 15 meters/second (measured at the inlets (38)), while at the heating station a plate heater (42) of a size which is larger than the area of the shoe bottom is provided. Ideally, when the shoe is removed from the apparatus, an outsole having a reactivated coating of adhesive can be located with the shoe bottom and bonded thereto, without reactivation of the shoe bottom adhesive itself. Also disclosed is a shoe support (46) for supporting shoes of a wide range of sizes with little or no need for adjustment, said support comprising a plurality of pairs of shoe-engaging rolls (60, 62, 64) between which the downwardly depending portions of the shoe last can be accommodated.
