摘要: An apparatus for providing therapeutic electric current to a treatment site of a patient is disclosed, which provides two oscillating or pulsing electric alternating currents, of frequencies which differ from each other by as little as 1 Hz and up to about 250 Hz, but each being of frequency at least about 1 KHz. The apparatus requires only one feed electrode adapted to feed the electric currents to selected feed sites on or beneath the epidermal or mucous surface of the patient, and only one return electrode adapted to be positioned on or beneath the epidermal or mucous surface of the patient, locally to the treatment site. The apparatus includes a feedback subsystem to detect impedance changes in the patient and accordingly adjust the output of the apparatus.

摘要: An electronic stimulation system is used to control pain over multiple regions of a patient's body. The system has one or more percutaneous leads, each having multiple electrodes, implanted within the patient's epidural space parallel to the axis of the spinal cord. The leads are connected to either a totally implanted system or a radio frequency system. The system is able to treat pain over different regions of a patient's body by “simultaneously” stimulating the patient with at least three different stimulation settings. “Simultaneous” stimulation involves sequentially stimulating the patient with the multiple stimulation settings such that the patient receives the cumulative effect of each stimulation setting, while not perceiving the transition from one stimulation setting to another.

摘要: An apparatus for generating an electrical signal for use in biomedical applications, including two timing blocks for generating timing intervals T1-T7, an interconnection block for combining these intervals into an output signal having predetermined relationships among the intervals, an output block for transmitting the output signal to a load, and, optionally, a filter for removing unwanted frequency components from the output signal and an adjustment block for selecting from among a plurality of output signals with predetermined characteristics. The output is a repeating succession of a burst of rectangular waves, an equalizing pulse (if needed) to cancel net DC, and a rest period of no signal.

摘要: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for hyperpolarizing the medial branch of the spinal nerve associated with a painful spinal facet joint so as to block pain impulses from reaching the spinal cord. The preferred apparatus includes a neurostimulator and two or more electrodes which carry electrical pulses to the target nerve or nerves. The impulses are intense enough to cause hyperpolarization of a given medial branch and its articular branches, but not so large as to spread to the spinal cord itself. In the preferred embodiment the stimulator is physically small and battery operated, facilitating implantation underneath the skin. The stimulator includes a controller and appropriate electronics operative to generate electrical impulses tailored to an individual's need for appropriate pain relief in terms of pulse frequency, pulse width, and pulse amplitude. In an alternative embodiment, the stimulator further includes electrodes and electrical circuitry operative to monitor myoelectrical activity generated by the surrounding muscles and modulate the impulses generated by the stimulator to meet the demands of the individual's activity and/or prolong battery life.

摘要: Methods, and apparatus are disclosed for stimulation the central, peripheral, and autonomic with particular attention being given to the medial branch (210) of the spinal nerve (212) associated with a painful spinal facet joint so as to block pain impulses from reaching the spinal cord. The preferred apparatus includes a neurostimulator (204), and two or more electrodes (206) which carry electrical pulses to the target nerves. The impulses are intense enough to cause stimulation of a given medial branch (210), and its articular branches, but not so large as to spread to the spinal cord itself. In the preferred embodiment the stimulator (204) is physically small and battery operated facilitating implantation underneath the skin. The stimulator (204) includes a controller (not shown), and appropriate electronics operative to generate electrical impulses tailored to an individual's need for appropriate pain relief in terms of pulse frequency, pulse width, and pulse amplitude. In an alternative embodiment, the stimulator (204) further includes electrodes (206), and electrical circuitry operative to monitor myoelectrical activity generated by the surrounding muscles, and modulate the impulses generated by the stimulator to meet the demands of the individual's activity and/or prolong battery life.

摘要: A method and apparatus that pretreat a patient prior to each therapeutic painful stimulus in a series of therapeutic painful stimuli, comprising the application of pain inhibiting stimuli to the patient prior to the application of each therapeutic painful stimulus in the series. Applying pain inhibiting stimuli comprises the steps of sensing a need for a next therapeutic painful stimulus in a series, preparing to deliver the pain inhibiting stimuli to the patient prior to applying the next therapeutic painful stimulus, and delivering the pain inhibiting stimuli to the patient prior to applying the next therapeutic painful stimulus. The method and apparatus are embodied in modern, noninvasive, transcutaneous or transesophageal pacing devices, either as stand-alone cardiac pacemakers, combination pacemaker-ECG monitors, or combination pacemaker-monitor-defibrillators. The pain inhibiting prepulse method is intended primarily for use in conscious patients but may also be used in sleeping patients.

摘要: An article for use in applying an electrical stimulus to a pedicle area of an antlered animal includes a clamp for securely attaching the article to the pedicle area and an attached electrode for establishing electrical contact with the pedicle area. The article may be used in conjunction with a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) system to anesthetize the pedicle area for harvesting purposes, or as part of a system to provide long or short term electrical stimulation to the pedicle in order to enhance blood flow to the area. Processes of applying electrical stimulation to the pedicle area to stimulate growth are also discussed.

摘要: A method and apparatus are disclosed for treating patients suffering from severe, unrelenting pain. A therapeutic stimulation signal is selectively applied from a stimulus generator, when activated, to at least some of plural electrodes implanted in stimulating relation to at least two nerves among the patient's trigeminal, vagus, glossopharyngeal and sympathetic nerves, and the stimulus generator is activated to generate the therapeutic stimulation signal to alleviate the pain under treatment. Alternatively, the therapeutic stimulation signal is selectively applied to at least one electrode implanted in stimulating relation to at least one of the patient's trigeminal, vagus, glossopharyngeal and sympathetic nerves, and if the selected nerve is the vagus nerve, the signal is applied to a supra-diaphragmatic or sub-diaphragmatic site, either unilaterally or bilaterally to one or both branches, respectively, of the vagus nerve.

摘要: A method and apparatus particularly useful for pain control by selectively blocking the propagation of body-generated action potentials travelling through a nerve bundle by using a tripolar electrode device to generate unidirectional action potentials to serve as collision blocks with the body-generated action potentials representing pain sensations in the small-diameter sensory fibers. In the described preferred embodiments there are a plurality of electrode devices spaced along the length of the nerve bundle which are sequentially actuated with delays corresponding to the velocity of propagation of the body-generated action potentials through the large-diameter fibers to produce a “green wave” effect which minimizes undesired anodal blocking of the large-diameter fibers while maximizing the collision blocking of the small-diameter fibers.
