摘要: A method and apparatus are disclosed for treating patients suffering from severe, unrelenting pain. A therapeutic stimulation signal is selectively applied from a stimulus generator, when activated, to at least some of plural electrodes implanted in stimulating relation to at least two nerves among the patient's trigeminal, vagus, glossopharyngeal and sympathetic nerves, and the stimulus generator is activated to generate the therapeutic stimulation signal to alleviate the pain under treatment. Alternatively, the therapeutic stimulation signal is selectively applied to at least one electrode implanted in stimulating relation to at least one of the patient's trigeminal, vagus, glossopharyngeal and sympathetic nerves, and if the selected nerve is the vagus nerve, the signal is applied to a supra-diaphragmatic or sub-diaphragmatic site, either unilaterally or bilaterally to one or both branches, respectively, of the vagus nerve.

摘要: An electromagnetic radiation treatment regime includes identifying a target area of a patient. In one embodiment, the target area is a virally-infected cell or tissue. An electromagnetic radiation source, for example, a low frequency and/or radio frequency electromagnetic radiation source, is selected, along with treatment session parameters, such as, pulse frequency, pulse duration, electrical current, magnetic flux density, and/or treatment session exposure time. An amount of electromagnetic radiation is applied to the target area, and a response to the electromagnetic radiation in the target area is measured. Based on an evaluation of the measured response, the treatment parameters may be modified for one or more subsequent electromagnetic radiation treatment session.

摘要: Systems and methods for treating neuro-psychiatric disorders, such as depression or schizophrenia, and/or other illnesses are disclosed. A patient is diagnosed with a particular neuro-psychiatric disorder or other illness. An electric nerve stimulation (ENS) technique, such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), is administered to the patient in conjunction with a magnetic nerve stimulation (MNS) technique. The magnetic nerve stimulation (MNS) technique includes applying a magnetic field to a pre-selected synaptic region of a brain of the patient based on the diagnosis. A physiological response of the brain, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) activity, is monitored. One or more parameters of the magnetic field may be selectively adapted in response to the monitored physiological response. The administration of the ENS technique and the MNS technique may be performed simultaneously, in serial order, or in alternating order depending on the diagnosis.

摘要: A neurocybernetic prosthesis for controlling or preventing epileptic seizures and other motor disorders includes a pulse generator which generates electrical pulses having a frequency of between 30 and 300 cycles per second, a pulse duration of between 0.3 and 1 millisecond and a constant current of between 1 and 20 milliamperes. The generator is enclosed in an epoxy-titanium shell and is implanted in the body, preferably in the axilla. Electrode leads pass from the generator through a subcutaneous tunnel and terminate in an electrode patch on the vagus nerve. Provisions are made for varying the electrical signal from the generator after it has been implanted to "tune" the same to the patient. The prosthesis may be designed to be turned on manually when the patient senses the imminence of a convulsion. Alternatively, sensors may be provided for determining changes in the values of state parameters such as electroencephalographic waves which precede a convulsion. The pulse generator can then be turned on automatically in response to the sensors.
