A two-piece bowling ball includes a non-symmetrical weight block or core to provide improved and increased rotation inertia. The block consists of head, body and tip portions. The block is asymmetric in plan, the asymmetry being the result of truncation of a plan-symmetric form of the block by a plane extending through the block at an angle of less than 90 degrees to the vertical, removing less than 50% of the plan-symmetric block mass. The untruncated form of the head is a spherical segment of one base having its spherical surface concentric with the surface of the ball. The non-truncated body is in the form of a cylinder or parallelepiped, while the tip in its untruncated form is of a shape having a maximum diameter no greater than that of the body whose diameter is no greater than that of the head. The tip is further chosen such that overall top eccentricity after truncation does not exceed three ounces in accordance with ABC guidelines.

The ball comprises a solid inner core made from a mineral oxide such as lead oxide mixed with a binding resin such as polyester, an outer core surrounding the inner core and made from filled or unfilled elastomers such as polyurethane or polyester, and a low density syntactic foam cover encapsulating the outer core and made from polyurethane or other elastomers mixed with glass microballoons, and having a minimum Shore D hardness of 72 and a maximum specific gravity of 1. The inner core in conjunction with the outer core and cover has a calculated maximum moment of inertia of 0.184 in-ozs-sec.sup.2 per pound of ball weight, for providing a substantially high total kinetic energy output. An additional increase in total kinetic energy output is obtained by the use of a high density annular top weight mass located closely around the inner core such that its lower surface is located at the midplane of the ball.

A bowling ball construction in which in the preferred embodiment a pair of weight blocks are provided internally in the ball to compensate for weight removed from the ball in drilling finger and thumb holes. The weight blocks are positioned so as to be intersected by the finger and thumb holes when drilled. As a result, there is no concentrated residual weight in the ball after drilling. The size of the weight blocks and the density thereof are selected so that after drilling, any axis of the ball may be spin axis with moments of inertia about principal axes being approximately equal and products of inertia about axes perpendicular to the spin axis being vanishingly small. Thus, the ball exhibits stability without wobble as it slides and rolls down a lane.

The outer diameter of the soft ball may be about 3 3/8 inches, the thickness of the shell may be from 0.050 to 0.080 inches, and the weight of the soft ball may be about 12 ounces.

The ball halves are connected together by a latching system having a hook and catch bar with the hook connected over the bar when the ball halves are together but which are separated by hitting a sensitive area of one of the ball halves to drive the hook off the bar. Resilient springs bias the two ball halves away from each other so that when the hook is driven off the catch bar, the ball separates into two halves. Various ball games can be played where the object of the game is to avoid hitting the sensitive area on the surface of the ball to prevent the ball from separating, or alternatively, to hit the sensitive area to make the ball separate.

The first and second spherical segments have respective outer peripheral surfaces formed of a first material having a hook potential, whereas the annular band has an outer peripheral surface formed of a second material having a hook potential different from the hook potential of the first material. In one embodiment the hook potential of the second material is substantially lower than the hook potential of the first material so as to make the ball less sensitive to conditions in the wet portion of the lane and delay significant hooking action until the dry portion so as to improve entry angle and thereby pin count. One way, albeit imperfect, to approximate the hooking potential of a material is to measure its coefficient of friction. A larger coefficient of friction generally leads to a higher hooking potential. A method of using the ball is also disclosed.
