    摘要: A flotation separation apparatus for separating particles in suspensions, feeds slurry containing the particles through an inlet into a contactor where gas is fed through an inlet to mix with the slurry, for example in a downwardly plunging jet, to form a gas-liquid bubbly two-phase mixture under pressure from an outlet restriction in a throttling duct. The mixture is passed through a flow manipulator configured to induce a high energy dissipation rate, for example by way of a Shockwave formed in a diverging section of the throttling duct reducing the size of the bubbles and brining those bubbles into intimate contact with particles in the mixture which is released into a separation cell where a flow manipulating draft tube is provided to reduce turbulence in the mixture. Alternative apparatus and methods for inducing the high energy dissipation rate and for reducing turbulence in the mixture are also described and claimed.

    摘要: The present invention relates to an apparatus and a process for efficient hydrophobic particles to gas bubble attachment in a slurry is provided. The process comprises: tangentially introducing a slurry stream into a cylindrical chamber having a cylindrical inner wall with sufficient volume and pressure to develop a vortex in the flowing slurry; introducing gas into the flowing slurry during at least a portion of its travel in the chamber, the gas being introduced orthogonally to the stream through means located at the chamber inner wall and for developing gas bubbles which move into the slurry. The apparatus comprises of: a cylindrical chamber having a cylindrical inner wall, the chamber being oriented in any direction, enclosed at both ends, and with an entry port to introduce the stream of slurry to develop a spiral flow of the stream along the chamber inner wall toward the output end, a porous wall to permit the introduction of gas orthogonally into the stream to develop gas bubbles within the stream, and an exit port to discharge the mixture of slurry and gas bubbles.

    摘要: Flotation apparatus for flocculated solid material has a flotation tank alongside a passage for upward flow of liquid carrying the solid material. A wall of the passage on the side towards the tank has a top portion curved over to its free edge to provide a submerged weir over which the liquid passes from the passage into the tank. To prevent turbulence in the liquid on passing over the weir and to prevent a preferential flow path in the flotation tank, the tank itself has, on its side towards the upward flow passage, a side wall which is generally spaced from the side wall of the passage but joins the latter wall away from the said free edge. The tank side wall slopes downwardly away from the passage from a point located inwardly of the tank with respect to the free edge.

    摘要: Suspended droplets of oil are separated from a waste water stream by the method and apparatus of the present invention. The oil and water mixture is injected into a partially submerged, vertical pipe. Gas bubbles injected into the lower end of the pipe, rise through the pipe and counter-currently contact the suspended oil droplets, thereby promoting the separation of the droplets from the waste water. The oil droplets coalesce and form a separate oil layer on top of the waste water which is readily withdrawn while clarified waste water is discharged from the lower end of the pipe. If employed to separate oil from a waste water stream on an offshore rig, the vertical pipe is submerged adjacent to the rig.

    摘要: Apparatus for removing oil and other flotsam from water, including an elongate tank with an inlet at the upstream end for introducing a fluid and flotsam mixture into the tank to provide a mean fluid level in the tank. A plurality of longitudinally spaced, vertical dams extend transversely across the tank dividing it into longitudinally spaced zones, each of the dams having an upper edge spaced below the mean fluid level in the tank. A vertical weir is provided in each zone extending across the tank so as to divide the zone into an upstream section and a downstream section. Each of the weirs has an upper portion which extends above the mean fluid level and a lower edge spaced above the bottom wall of the tank. The weirs are preferably angularily positioned relative to the longitudinal axis of the tank so as to converge with the side wall of the tank at an acute angle to provide a collecting corner for receiving flotsam. Skimming means are provided at various of the upstream collecting corners to remove the flotsam which collects therein. An open-ended pipe is provided at one or more of the downstream collecting corners, the open end of the pipe being positioned beneath the fluid surface, and pump means are provided to cause a mixture of fluid, flotsam and air to be drawn into the open end of the pipe and to be transported to one or more of the upstream zones and to be dispersed therein for further downstream flow.

The apparatus, due to the inherent cleaning-promotion effects of the gas bubbles and the continuous internal contaminant removal, finds advantageous use in removing materials from liquids which themselves are simultaneously being utilized to clean difficult-to-clean objects, e.g., detergent solutions being used to clean permanent air filters for commercial-size air-conditioning systems and for grills, deep-fat fryers and stoves of restaurants.

    摘要: A flotation machine having a battery of centrifugal cells which are disposed at the same level. The first cell receives a continuous stream of reagent-containing slurry from a receptacle and each other cell receives a continuous stream of slurry from the bottom part of the preceding cell. Each cell has a sealed annular cyclone chamber which receives slurry from the bottom part of the preceding cell or from the receptacle, and a froth collecting chamber which is surrounded by the respective cyclone chamber. The slurry rises into the cyclone chambers under the action of compressed air which is pumped into the slurry in such quantities that the surplus of air forms in each cyclone chamber a cushion from which air is withdrawn in controlled amounts for introduction into slurry which is being drawn from the bottom part of the respective cell. Compressed air serves to convey as well as to be dispersed in the slurry with attendant formation of froth which rises in and is withdrawn at the top of the corresponding froth collecting chamber.
