摘要:
A metallic material, particularly useful for electrical contacts, comprises a matrix metal, for example silver or copper, with additives embedded therein in powder form. However, while being in powder form the additives are arranged in elongate fiber like lengths preferably parallel fiber like lengths. A method of producing such a distribution is to fill a tube of the matrix metal with the powder and draw it out to wire thickness, bundle a number of such wires together and fuse the outer coverings to form a continuous matrix with embedded fiber like lengths of powder.

The apparent density of molding-grade, water atomized steel powder can be significantly increased by employing the following prescribed treatment. Coarse particles are removed in order that at least 80% of the initial powders are finer than 80 mesh. The size distribution of the powders is then determined. The powders are then annealed to both reduce the carbon and oxygen contents and soften the particles. The annealed and agglomerated particles are then ground in a disk mill at specified speeds and gap spacings, depending on the size distribution of the initial powders. Apparent densities in excess of 3.2 may be achieved by (a) employing powders with a coarser particle size distribution, (b) increasing the rotational speed of the disks and (c) decreasing the mill gap.

A self-contained powder metal mixture is dispersion strengthened within a sealed container by internal oxidation and thereafter extruded from the same sealed container to produce dispersionstrengthened metal stock or articles. The metal mixture comprises a mixture of powdered alloy and oxidant for complete internal oxidation of the alloy by the oxidant, and is adapted to dispersion strengthen the residue of oxidant upon coalescence and hot-working thereof in the extrusion step to produce dispersionstrengthened metal articles directly from the same container utilized for internal oxidation.

Metal powders are spread on a feeding belt or a supporting sheet which is continuously fed; the feeding belt or the supporting sheet on which the metal powders have been spread is passed through a sintering oven; and the metal powders are sintered, with adjacent uncompressed metal powders in contact with each other partly and gaps present therebetween. Consequently, contact portions of the metal powders are integrated with each other and the gaps are formed as fine pores.

Iron powder of high compressibility and low bulk density is made by atomizing a stream of molten steel by means of a conical jet of water at a rate in excess of 10 cubic meters water per metric ton of steel, the half cone angle is between 40.degree. and 60.degree., preferably 45.degree.; and air suction is provided in a region upstream from the cone, adjacent to the stream at a pressure of 0.02 to 0.20 bars below ambient, by means of a length adjustable tube extending down from the nozzle chamber. The powder is reduced at 1,000.degree. C. to 1,200.degree. C., and the resulting cake is broken up to obtain a powder having a particle size distribution with a higher content of larger particles than the powder immediately resulting from the atomization.

A method for preparing formed metallic structures involves admixing finely ground metals with a reactive phosphor or iron containing binder and subjecting the resultant mixture to compression.

Cermets are produced by the process of forming a physical mixture of a ceramic powder material with an elemental metal precursor compound and by decomposing the elemental metal precursor compound within the mixture. The decomposition step may be carried out either prior to or during a forming and densification step.

A composite article and method for making the same where the exterior surface of glass particles are coated with a metal. The metal coated glass particles are reduced to smaller, particular form and glass fibers are added to the reduced metal coated glass particles. The particles and glass fibers are formed under pressure to a given shape and the resulting shape is sintered to form a permanently-shaped article.

A process of forming a multi-phase sintered article of powdered metal comprising: blending a mixture of copper powder, aluminum powder, iron powder, and nickel, each in their free states, with a lubricant, compacting the blended mixture into a die cavity, forming the article, and high temperature sintering the article in a reducing atmosphere comprised of 100% dissociated ammonia so as to produce the multi-phase sintered article of powdered metal; and the multi-phase sintered article of powdered metal formed thereby.

Iron oxide powder, e.g., ore, is reduced in a CO/N.sub.2 atmosphere at a temperature between 750.degree. to 1200.degree. C., whereby prior to the onset of precipitation of metallic iron the content of H.sub.2 is limited to 15% (vol) of the CO content, and SO.sub.2, H.sub.2 S, COS or another suitable gaseous sulphur compound is developed or maintained in the reducing atmosphere at a range from 0.0005 to 0.1% (vol), preferably 0.001 to 0.01% (vol) in relation to the CO content.
