A resistance welding electrode that is particularly suited for resistance spot welding a workpiece to a substrate without cross-contaminating specific portions of the workpiece is described. This is done by sheathing an internal surface of the welding electrode with a thermoplastic polymeric material. Then, there is only contact between the welding electrode and the workpiece at the very distal end of the electrode adjacent to where the workpiece is to be connected to the substrate. Contamination in this area is not detrimental because subsequent workpiece plating does not take place there.

A connecting adapter configured to mate on opposite ends with a standard adapter shank and a standard welding electrode of the resistance type. The connecting adapter is a hollow body with male and female connecting portions. The male portion, integral with the female portion, is sized to accommodate the standard welding electrode thereon. The female portion is sized to accommodate a taper portion of the shank within the hollow body and has exterior cross-sectional dimensions similar to those of the shank. The connecting adapter being formed of a wear-resistant conductive martial is replaced only periodically, thus reducing greatly the wear on the more expensive standard adapter shank.

A micro-welding electrode which is installed in a welding machine and applied to the electronics industry and spot electric welding industry. The micro-welding electrode includes two integrated electrodes which are made from high-temperature-resistant materials and has a placed insulation between the two electrodes. The insulation between the two parallel electrodes is an insulative chipbonder with the function of agglutination, fixation, insulation and separation, and allows for dispensing with an insulative rivet. Simultaneously, the tip of the two parallel electrodes is positioned into mutual Ohm contact. Not only can the electrode directly weld enameled wires but also has the quality of effectively welding bare wires, sheet metal and metal tapes. The electrode has a simple and reliable construction, is low in production cost, has a good quality of welding and allows for high work efficiency.

Resistance welding device of the type comprising two welding electrodes (21, 31) that are displaceable in relation to one another and can clamp between them the sheet metal to be welded. One of said electrodes (31) is connected to driving means formed by a screw-nut mechanism (8, 9) operated by an electric motor (6), said driving means being connected to electronic control means (7) capable of controlling the force with which the electrodes (21, 31) clamp said sheet metal to be welded by controlling the supply current of the electric motor (6). The device of the invention is characterized in that said screw-nut mechanism transmitting the force of the motor (6) to the electrodes (21, 31) is highly efficient and reversible, and in that said electronic means (7) control the clamping force of said electrodes by a closed control loop using the value of the supply current passing through the electric motor (6).

The system also provides apparatus for verifying that the proper pressure is applied to the workpieces by the electrodes during the welding operation.

A welding electrode for welding a fastener to an object is provided. The electrode includes a housing assembly with a bore disposed in the housing assembly. A pin is disposed within the bore and is movable along an axis between extended and depressed positions. The pin is retained in the bore by a flange on a lower portion of the pin that extends radially outwardly. A spring is arranged within the bore and urges the pin from the depressed position to the extended position in which a weld nut may be loaded onto the pin. The spring has a compressed length indicative of a spring failure. A stop such as a spring insulator is arranged within the bore adjacent to at least a portion of the spring. The stop extends generally longitudinally in the direction of the pin axis. The stop defines a maximum spring compression length in a fully depressed pin position that may be caused from an improperly loaded weld nut. The maximum spring compression length is greater than the compressed length so that the spring does not become compressed to the point of failure. The stop is preferably constructed from nylon and has a length sufficient to accommodate excessive forces on the stop caused by an improperly loaded weld nut.

Apparatus and method for separating and replacing a cap from a shank of a tip of a welding electrode. The cap and the shank form a peripheral hollow joint that is defined by a recessed end surface of the shank and a back surface of the cap. The apparatus includes a guide frame having a recessed portion sized for receiving the tip of the welding electrode. The apparatus also includes a cap withdrawing tool movably mounted on the guide frame. The tool has two facing wall sections each having a wedge that is inserted in the peripheral hollow joint. The wedge is forced against the back surface of the cap and removes the cap from the shank by means of a driving mechanism that moves the cap withdrawing tool toward the tip of the welding electrode that is engaged in the recessed portion of the guide frame.
