    Abstract: A sawmill for cutting logs in successive bi-directional passes that includes a pair of horizontally extending beams, a carriage assembly and a saw head mounted atop the carriage assembly. The saw head includes a band saw drive source and at least one set of first and second band saw blade wheels. First and second band saw blades partially circumscribe the first and second band saw blade wheels with the cutting edge of the first and second band saw blades directed oppositely from one another so that as the carriage assembly and saw head travel along the frame the log is cut by the first saw blade and as the carriage assembly and saw head reciprocates on the beams in the opposite direction, a second section is cut from the log by the second band saw blade.

    Abstract: A radial sawing method for cutting a log into six sections. Each resulting section has a triangular wedge shape, such that in cross-section, an angle of approximately sixty-degrees (60°) at the interior edge of the log section is formed. The approximately 60° angle can be the point of an equilateral triangle. After the log has been formed into six pieces that are relatively equivalent in size and shape, each respective piece can then be fed into additional sawing machines for additional processing, such as to form symmetrically shaped pieces, include a circle, a square, a hexagon, an octagon, or other polygon pieces.

    Abstract: A battery of vertical band saws is adjustable to vary the spacing between bands and is used to both edge and resaw material. A preparation table upstream from the saws receives material from a recirculating conveyor or from a head rig, orients the material in the most desirable position for cutting and transfers the material endwise to an infeed table. The infeed table has toothed conveyor rolls for feeding the material positively into the saws, an overhead pneumatic roll for engaging the top of the material while edging and driven side press rolls for pressing the material against a line bar when resawing. Downstream from the saws an edge picker table has a pair of longitudinal separating plates normally aligned with the two outside saws for separating edge trimmings from the material to be processed into lumber. The plates are withdrawn from alignment with the saws when resawing. A sweep table receives material from the edge picker table and includes sweep fingers which sweep across the table for transferring material sideways to the recirculating conveyor and pivot downwardly to permit transfer of material endwise from such table.

    Abstract: A band saw, especially intended for sawing logs with the grain or dividing wood blocks, comprising upper and lower band pulleys (6,4) which can be adjusted relative to one another. Extending around the pulleys is an endless, band-like saw blade (11) which is driven by one (4) of the bandpulleys. The lower band pulley (4) is journalled in a frame structure (3) which can be moved along two mutually parallel guides (13,14) extending at right angles to the feed direction of the material to be sawn. The frame structure carries a post (5) which in turn carries at the top thereof the other band pulley (6). In accordance with the invention the one guide (14) is located substantially vertically above the other guide (13), suitably so that the two guides (13,14) are located in a common vertical plane which passes vertically through the post (5).

    Abstract: A log sawing and transport system for relatively small logs has an infeed and loading station where logs are positioned in a centering device for aligning the logs with respect to the saws. Once the log is properly aligned for axial movement, a set of end dogs are actuated to hold the log in its prealigned position for transport. The dogs are mounted within axially movable carriage units that travel the length of the system serving to transport the log axially in a straight line. At the sawing station a plurality of angularly arranged saws are disposed to divide the traveling log into a plurality of elongated sector-shaped pieces. At least one selected saw may be adjustable with respect to the other saws in order to set angles for the sector-shaped pieces. Once the log has been divided into a plurality of sector-shaped pieces, an outfeed device collects the elongated sector-shaped pieces and transports them out of the system.
