An injection apparatus includes an injection frame; a cylinder member attached to the injection frame; an injection member disposed within the cylinder member such that the same can rotate and can advance and retreat; a rotary slide member attached to the injection member; a stator attached to the injection frame, and a rotor disposed radially inward of the stator to be rotatable relative to the stator. The rotor includes a hollow, cylindrical member disposed radially outward of the rotary slide member and movably relative to the rotary slide member, and a magnet attached to the cylindrical member. In this case, the rotor has a cylindrical member and a magnet and can transmit generated rotation directly to the rotary slide member. Therefore, a transmission mechanism which consists of an output gear, a counter drive gear, a counter driven gear, a rotary member, etc. becomes unnecessary; and generation of noise due to meshing engagement of gears and other components can be prevented. Accordingly, the number of components can be reduced, generation of torque loss can be prevented, and cost of the injection apparatus can be reduced.

An innovative method and apparatus for synchronizing the flows of molten polymer or similar materials in molding systems which utilize manifolds to direct flow into one or more cavities of an injection mold. The apparatus utilizes intermeshing positive displacement, interconnected gearing systems similar to positive displacement gear pumps in hydraulic systems. These positive displacement gear mechanisms are placed in each parallel flow channel such that all flow in each channel passes through a gear mechanism. Each of the parallel pumps are connected together directly via a shaft or indirectly using hydraulic motors, stepper motors, or other motors to synchronize the parallel flows. Each flow can be different to allow the directing of flows in complex tools or when molding parts in family molds. This is accomplished either by varying the volume of each positive displacement gear mechanism by varying the thickness of the gears or by varying the speed of rotation of each of the gear mechanisms in a synchronized way. The alternative apparatus which is indirectly connected can also be utilized to allow each mold cavity to be filled as an entity by sequentially allowing a flow in any desired combination to each of the plurality of flow channels. Thus, the indirectly connected apparatus can be used in a non-synchronous manner. After a mold cavity is filled, the gear mechanisms can be utilized as melt pumps to continue packing or holding plastic in the mold cavity. By reversing the pump mechanisms, precise decompression of the flow channels to eliminate gate stringing and other adverse effects can be accomplished.

An injection unit for an injection molding machine includes an injection device in the form of a plunger/screw, which is driven axially and rotationally in a housing, and a device intended for mixing and metering plastic melt and including an inlet for introduction of an additive. A spacer element is disposed between a backflow prevention assembly of the screw and the plunger, with the spacer element having a length, which corresponds at least to the stroke of the injection device. The spacer element has a first flow channel for establishing in each position a fluidic connection with a second flow channel which initially extends radially in an outward direction and then parallel to the movement and guide area of the plunger to an area between a nozzle and the plunger. The second flow channel extends through the mixing and metering device arranged adjacent to a movement and guide area of the plunger.

A process for preparing an injection-molded cutlery. The process includes providing a mixture of a filler and a polymer. The mixture comprises from about 30 to about 70 wt. % filler and from about 30 to about 70 wt. % polymer. The mixture is heated to its melting temperature and then injected into a mold. The mixture is cooled so as to form the cutlery. The cutlery is ejected from the mold.

A method of making a composite article of a graphite-filled polymer mixture that is robust during high shear mixing and compounding, and that exhibits relatively low electrical resistivity after molding. The mixture is formed by shear mixing a liquid polymeric material, graphitized carbon fibers having diameters of less than one micrometer, and glass fibers longer than the carbon fibers. The carbon and glass fibers constitute up to about 25 volume percent and up to about 50 weight percent, respectively, of the mixture, though the addition of as little as about 1 weight percent of the glass fibers has been shown to dramatically reduce resistivity. The mixture is then introduced into a mold so that the glass fibers are substantially oriented parallel to the direction of flow. Due at least in part to the glass fibers being larger than the carbon fibers, the carbon fibers are substantially aligned with the glass fibers and preferentially segregate to regions of the polymeric matrix near interfaces between the polymeric matrix and the glass fibers.

In a method of making impact-resistant modified thermoplastic materials, thermoplastic material is introduced in a continuously operating twin-screw extruder having two screws rotating in a same direction and plasticized. Admixed to the thermoplastic material in the extruder at a location well downstream of the feed area of the thermoplastic material is an additive, e.g. impact-resistant modification agent, reinforcing agent, or alloying agent, to produce an extrudate which is conveyed for injection into an injection mold alternately via two injection cylinders or via a storage cylinder and one injection cylinder.
