摘要： A photocomposing machine is illustrated as comprising a character display station, an optical projection station, and a recording station which includes a coherent fiber optics bundle for transmitting the image formed at the output of the projection station to a photosensitive recording material. Image enhancing apparatus and methods are shown for substantially completely eliminating from the recorded characters any image degradation attributable to broken fibers or to fiber interstitial patterns. More particularly, the disclosed image enhancement is accomplished, in part, by a pair of light-dispersing prisms, one at the input to the fiber bundle and the other at the output therefrom. The first prism acts to disperse light from each object point across a number of fibers such that no fiber carries more than a fraction of the light energy constituting the object point. The second prism recombines the dispersed character images to form an achromatic character image. By the use of the prisms, any energy voids in the image at the bundle output due to broken fibers or fiber interstitial patterns appear as low-energy streaks or patterns. A photosensitive recording material is exposed to the image to form a latent character image which is developed to high contrast to substantially completely eliminate any image defects attributable to such energy voids.

Photocomposing apparatus is shown as including means for displaying a character to be recorded and a plurality of lenses of different focal length mounted upon a rotatable lens turret. Novel turret indexing means is disclosed as comprising turret monitoring means for determining coarsely when a selected one of the lenses is approaching an axis along which the characters are projected, switch means actuated by cam means on the turret for determining when the selected lens is substantially on the projection axis, and extremely accurate turret locking means which is responsive to inputs from the turret-monitoring means and the switch means for locking the turret with the selected lens located precisely on the projection axis.

A photomatrix is fixed to the underside of a transparent member forming an indexing slide. This slide has on it a pattern of small holes corresponding lengthwise to the positions of the characters on the matrix, and transversely according to the width of the characters. The indexing slide is guided by guideways affixed to the base, which also holds and guides the paper or film. The operator sets a character by inserting the point of a stylus into the hole corresponding to the character, and moving the slide toward the center of the device, where the printing light is. The stylus moves the strip and the paper or film to a limiting point in the form of a cam stop which is disposed at an angle and the point at which the cam stop is contacted depends on the transverse position of the hole constraining its motion. Thus the appropriate advance of the film or paper is accomplished with the positioning of the character, and the exposure is then made in any suitable way.

摘要： An electronic typewriter comprising portable housing means having a typewriter keyboard comprising a plurality of individual finger keys on the housing means and being readily engageable by the user thereof, with chamber means in the housing means for containing a replaceable supply of paper. The paper having an emulsion sensitive to one portion of the light spectrum as an activating agent for producing tonal changes in the emulsion, and sensitive to another portion of the light spectrum as a retarder to stop further tonal change in the emulsion. Grid means is operatively associated with the housing means and extends in a substantially straight line to produce printed lines, with the grid means comprising printing filaments to which the paper is exposed, and the filaments being capable of producing light in the portion of the spectrum for producing the tonal changes in the emulsion. Coupling means electrically interconnects the keys to the grid means so as to progressively activate the grid means across the line in response to each of the keys on the keyboard being engaged during typing, and advancing means for moving the paper from the chamber means relative to the grid means, so as to produce line by line exposure of the paper to the grid means, such that the printed grid line is thereafter exposed to the light of the other portion of the light spectrum so as to stop the tonal change in the emulsion, such that printed typewritten lines are produced on the paper.

摘要： A coordinate digitizer is utilized in a phototypesetting automatic publications system, by means of which ideographic symbols are selected and electrically entered into the system. An array or ''''menu'''' of ideographic symbols is provided, and a coordinate digitizer including a pointer is connected so that designation of a particular symbol in the array by the pointer causes the generation of signals representative of the coordinates of that symbol in the array. A computer memory stores data for each of the symbols so that when coordinate signals corresponding to a particular symbol in the array are supplied to the computer means, the corresponding data are retrieved and utilized to form that symbol in the phototypesetter. The data thus retrieved from the computer memory are also utilized to operate a local symbol display, such as a facsimile recorder or cathode-ray tube display device, positioned adjacent the coordinate digitizer so that rapid proofing of the entered symbols may be provided. Preferably the ideographic-data input terminal is remote from the computer storage means and connected thereto by an appropriate communications link, and preferably scan converting means are provided adjacent the computer storage means to produce signals representing a lower-definition version of the symbols to be reproduced, which latter signals are sent back to the remote terminal to form the local display. Editing and format commands are also included in the ''''menu'''' to effect editing and composing of the text.

摘要： A photographic printing apparatus in which spaced photosensitive strips are secured to an image plane on top of a housing. An imaging font having two sets of identical symbols in spaced relationship is movably carried upon the housing overlying the photosensitive strips. Light is directed through selected portions of the imaging font upon one of the strips to form a latent image, which is subsequently developed and an instantly visible image on the other strip. The instantly visible image is used by the operator to space subsequent letters or symbols as the printing proceeds.
