A slidable load lift apparatus is selectively completely retractable into the bed of a standard pickup truck. The load lift apparatus includes a base frame member attached to the pickup truck bed, the base frame member supporting a substantially planar roller platform member slidably engaged with the base frame member. The base frame member includes a pair of elongate rail members extending in parallel along a first longitudinal axis and adapted to engage a set of roller wheels provided on the bottom of the roller platform member. A substantially planar lift platform member is operatively connected to the roller platform member through a set of parallelogram linkages which permit the lift platform to be moved between a raised position coplanar with the roller platform member and a lowered position out of the plane of the roller member for convenient loading of the lift platform at ground level. In the raised coplanar orientation between the lift platform member and the roller platform member, the platform member pair are slidable together relative to the base frame member. A locking arrangement is provided to prevent the inadvertent sliding of the roller platform member relative to the base frame member when the pickup truck vehicle supporting the load lift apparatus is in motion.

A lift platform has a retention ramp whose forward edge is pivotally connected to a rear edge of the platform by a hinge that permits inversion of the retention ramp to a stowed position overlying the platform. A latch member is mounted on a lateral edge of the retention ramp in operative alignment with a detent block secured to the rear edge of the platform, the detent block having a center on the axis of the hinge. The latch member is pivotally mounted and torsionally biased to press the nose portion into engagement with the periphery of the detent block, the latter having detent notches angularly spaced apart relative to its center for defining intermediate and stowed positions of the retention ramp. During movement of the retention ramp between extended and intermediate positions the nose of the latch engages a convex portion of the detent block periphery of a radius to depress the latch against the biasing force of the torsion spring. The detent notches have surface orientations for unidirectionally latching the retention ramp against movement out of the stowed and intermediate positions towards the extended position.

A load-lifting mast especially adapted for an automatically-guided, driverless vehicle has automatic features for ensuring accuracy and reliability of operation despite the absence of a driver. For load-lowering purposes, a slack chain sensor senses whether or not the load-supporting carriage is supported by the mast, and the carriage is withdrawn from the load when no support by the mast is indicated. The slack chain sensor also cooperates with a carriage height control system by overriding it to cause lowering past a target height until the carriage is supported independently of the mast. A carriage height sensor self-calibration system continually recalibrates the height-sensor readings automatically while the mast is in use to compensate for height sensor slip, chain stretching, and other mechanical variables. The stack chain sensor cooperates with the self-calibration system to enable it to reference to the ground or other surface upon which the vehicle travels to compensate for such other variables as tire wear. The mast is preferably powered by an electric motor-driven screw member having a wear-preventing, universal-joint-type connection to the carriage-lifting mechanism to prevent the imposition of unsymmetrical loading on the screw member. The electric motor has field effect transistor controls operable over a wide range of source voltages.

A panel 22 is vertically movable between branches 13 of the support to which it is connected by a raising device 25, 27. When the branches 13 are in a drawn out position, the panel 22 is lowered down to the ground while remaining horizontal by the raising device 25, 27. A wheeled chair 44 is then easily placed on the panel 42 which is raised, and the support is introduced into the compartment 1 by a driving device provided for this purpose.

The disclosure concerns steps interchangeable into a platform lift, such as for wheelchairs for vehicles. Such a convertible step lift comprises a frame mounted in a rectangular notched-out floor section, which frame comprises corner posts which also act as guides for up and down movement of the platform lift. The movable platform comprises three sections foldable into a lower step, a riser, and an upper step, which sections are pivoted on shafts along their adjacent edges. The pivot shaft for upper step section and riser also is connected to reciprocating motor means for raising and lowering the platform. Lever extensions are fixedly attached to the ends of the riser, which are pivotally connected to other reciprocating motor means which unfolds the riser from an acute angle under the upper step section into a position coplanar with the upper step and at the same time moves the lower step section horizontally outwardly and upwardly into the same coplane to form the platform. At the outer edge of the lower step section is another shaft to which a barrier plate and a ramp are pivoted and normally urged into their operative positions when the step sections are in platform position. The barrier is folded down by levers and links when the platform engages the ground. An additional lever connected to an end of the riser folds the ramp and the barrier into their inoperative positions when the sections are in their step position.

A safety locking mechanism for locking a hoist, such as a power operated tailgate, with repect to its supporting structure comprises: a pair of latch arms which are connected to one another by a flexible cable. A pair of power transmission chains connect the hoist to a power source. A pair of tension sensing lever arms are pivotally mounted and arranged to detect the presence or absence of a normal loading tension in the power transmission chains. The flexible cable also engages each of the tension sensing levers and is held by them in a position in which it retains the latch arms in a released position when a normal loading tension is detected in the power transmission chains. The latch arms will both move to a latching position locking the hoist when the absence of a normal loading tension is detected in the power transmission chains. The latch arms are made of a material which has a greater hardness than that of the slide members which support the platform so as to become embedded in the slide member when in the latching position.

A tail-gate assembly comprises a stationary support, a slide mounted on the stationary support, a platform pivotally mounted on the slide, a latch member mounted on and projecting laterally from said loading platform, a latch plate mounted on said stationary support. The latch plate has a latch notch formed therein which has an entrance way opening in a direction to admit the latching member. The notch is proportioned to receive said latch member in a close fitting relationship so as to provide a vertical restraint limiting vertical movement and a rotational restraint limiting rotational movement of said platform. A pair of latching jaws each having a locking tooth at one end thereof, are mounted on the latch plate for pivotal movement between a closed position in which the locking teeth extend inwardly from opposite sides of said entrance way to prevent withdrawal of the latching member from said notch and an open position in which the teeth are displaced outwardly from said entrance way to admit and release the latching member. A closure spring normally urges the jaws toward the closed position, the closure spring is adapted to yield to permit the jaws to open in response to contact with the latch member as it is moved into engagement therewith. An actuator is provided on the jaws which is adapted to cause the jaws to interact with one another whereby movement of one jaw toward the open position causes movement of the other jaw toward the open position.
