A system and method are provided for spacing railcars of a train apart from each other with a predetermined gap in between. Embodiments include a railcar spacing tool having a hydraulic cylinder with brackets at opposing ends for contacting the frame of each of a pair of adjoined adjacent railcars to be spaced from each other, and a cylinder support frame attached to the cylinder and movably attached to a support vehicle such that the support frame is movable from a retracted position to an extended position where the brackets are between the frames of the pair of railcars. After moving the cylinder support frame to the extended position, the brackets are positioned in contact with the railcar frames, and the cylinder is engaged to create the predetermined gap between the railcars. The railcars' brakes are applied to preserve the gap, and the spacing tool is then removed.

A ballast load device for increasing a tractive effort of a railcar mover having a coupler includes a side member and a bottom attached to the side member. The bottom is adapted to support a weight. A primary coupler is attached to the side member and is adapted to removably connect to the coupler of the railcar mover such that the railcar coupler may lift the ballast load device.
摘要:
A railcar moving vehicle having a hydraulic system for raising the vehicle coupler while coupled to a railroad car or the like to transfer weight from the railcar to the vehicle. By this invention, fluid pressure in the hydraulic power line is sensed, to monitor an increase in the fluid pressure as the hydraulic system raises the vehicle coupler while coupled to a railcar. Then, when a substantial termination of the increase in fluid pressure is sensed as the hydraulic coupler is raised, an indicator signals the occurrence of this event, typically by automatically terminating the hydraulic raising of the vehicle coupler. Thus, weight may be transferred without overraising the railcar, without the need for estimating the weight of the railcar prior to the weight transfer process.

A propulsion device for a rail vehicle, such as a railway train, applies power for propulsion directly between the frame of the vehicle and the rails without intervention of wheels. The device includes articulated members for connecting the frame of the vehicle to the device, a hydraulic cylinder for displacing the device between a lifted neutralized position for normal travel and a lowered working position, and two movable cross-bars having jaws mounted at opposite ends thereof. Traction hydraulic cylinders connect each movable cross-bar and the vehicle frame. A hydraulic cylinder is used to engage and disengage the jaws to rails.

A rail traction vehicle for moving railway cars and adapted for transferring weight from a railway car coupled therewith to the traction vehicle. Separate road and rail wheels are provided which selectively and alternatively support the vehicle either wholly on the road wheels or wholly on the rail wheels. A single differential axle is operatively connected in driving relationship with at least one pair of road wheels and with at least two pairs of rail wheels, the respective wheels in each of which pairs of wheels are mounted in opposed relationship to each other on opposite sides of the vehicle.

A tow conveyor includes at least one carrier. Connected to the front and rear of the carrier are rod members extending forwardly downward and rearwardly downward respectively and pivotally movable in horizontal and vertical directions. Running assemblies free to move on guide rails are connected to the lower ends of the rod members respectively so as to be pivotally movable in horizontal and vertical directions. The front running assembly has an engaging dog projecting downward and the rear running assembly has a horizontal tilting plate. A trolley driven on endless rails has pivoted thereto a pusher engageable with the engaging dog and tilting dogs to be pivotally forced down by the tilting plate on the rear running assembly of a preceding carrier to thereby tilt the pusher through a link when the carrier approaches the preceding carrier.
