In a power steering system having hydraulic power support for motor vehicles, a steering gear shaft having a steering wheel is connected to an input element of a steering gear. An output element of the steering gear is connected to wheels of the vehicle to be steered. Two working chambers of a servo motor of a power boosting system can be supplied with a hydraulic medium from a servo pump through a steering valve in accordance with a torque applied in the area of the steering gear shaft input element. Two sensors for detecting an angle of rotation and a torque are provided on the steering gear shaft and on the output element of the steering gear accordingly. After the steering wheel has been released after a steering operation, the wheels to be steered and the steering gear can be returned with hydraulic support. Both the intensity and direction of the hydraulic power support as well as the returning of the wheels to be steered are controlled by a common, electronically controlled electromagnetic valve. In addition, only one steering force sensor and/or torque sensor is provided for detecting the steering force. With this sensor, the control distances can be reduced greatly, thus yielding a high steering accuracy.

A rear wheel steering control determines, when desired and actual lateral accelerations of a vehicle have the same direction, an instantaneous dynamic yaw center on a vehicle longitudinal axis in response to the measured vehicle speed. It further determines a cornering radius and an instantaneous Ackerman center as a point at the outer end of the cornering radius extended outward perpendicular to the vehicle longitudinal axis from the instantaneous Ackerman center. The control then directs a rear wheel of the vehicle to be perpendicular to a line connecting the instantaneous Ackerman center to the center of the wheel. The dynamic yaw center, and thus the instantaneous Ackerman center, is preferably shifted rearward with increasing vehicle speed to shift vehicle steering in a direction from oversteer at very low speeds for greater ease of steering in parking maneuvers to understeer for vehicle stability in high speed driving conditions. The method and apparatus preferably include a reverse lock routine to control the rear wheels when the desired and actual lateral accelerations of the vehicle have opposing directions, to control the vehicle in a four wheel drift; and the reverse lock routine may further adjust suspension damping.

In order to allow a traffic-lane following device in a vehicle to be used at relatively high vehicle speeds, a steering system is provided with a steering handle and a steering run which couples the steering handle to vehicle steered wheels. A servomotor is coupled to the steering run. A servovalve is arranged in the steering run and has a first control part (which is associated with a section on the steering handle side of the steering run) as well as a second control part (which is associated with a section on the vehicle steered wheel side of the steering run) to operate the servomotor as a function of relative movements between the control parts. An actuating drive is coupled to the section on the steering handle side of the steering run and is used to produce a steering force. A regulating and control arrangement uses a sensor system to determine required steering angle values which allow a traffic lane to be followed and uses a steering angle sensor to determine actual steering angle values. The actuating drive is operated as a function of a comparison of the required and actual steering angles, in which the steering angle sensor interacts with the section on the vehicle steered wheel side of the steering run.

The alignment of the pinion axis (A) with the pinion housing is effected via the existing contact line (B) between the rack teeth and the pinion teeth. The rack teeth are pressed without play between the pinion teeth by means of an additional pressure member (7) in the lid (5) of the pressure piece (3) thereby aligning the pinion axis (A) with the pinion housing (6). After the rack-and-pinion assisted steering system is mounted in the vehicle, the pressure member (7) is removed and the effect of the spring-mounted pressure piece (3) is reestablished. The aligned pinion axis (A) ensures a good rolling between pinion and rack teeth.
