摘要: A satellite refueling system has a refueling satellite carrying fuel, a fuel hose connected to the fuel carried by the refueling satellite, with a maneuverable end effector at a deployed end of the fuel hose, the end effector comprising a fuel supply nozzle connected to the fuel hose, a plurality of thrusters on the end effector providing thrust in a plurality of directions, an imaging device on the end effector capturing images in an immediate environment of the end effector, and computerized circuitry operating individual ones of the plurality of thrusters in response to the images captured by the imaging device. The refueling satellite deploys the fuel hose, and the computerized circuitry operates the thrusters to maneuver the end effector, bringing the fuel supply nozzle to a location to deliver fuel.

摘要: A launch system and method for orbital or suborbital air-launch of a payload involving releasably coupling a launch vehicle with a towed aircraft via an articulatable carriage to form an air-launch assembly, towing the air-launch assembly via a tow aircraft and interconnected tow cable to a first altitude, releasing the air-launch assembly from tow at or above the first altitude, activating the towed aircraft propulsion system and initiating a pull-up and climb maneuver of the towed aircraft to a second altitude, articulating the articulatable carriage to shift the air-launch assembly from a stowed position to a deployed position with the launch vehicle spaced from the towed aircraft, releasing the launch vehicle from the articulatable carriage and thus from the towed aircraft, and activating the launch vehicle propulsion system for further altitude gain or to meet specific mission requirements.

摘要: Aerial launch and/or recovery for unmanned aircraft, and associated systems and methods are described. A representative system includes a first, carrier aircraft having an airframe, a propulsion system carried by the airframe and positioned to support the carrier aircraft in hover, and a capture line carried by the carrier aircraft and deployable to hang from the carrier aircraft. The capture line is sized to releasably engage with a capture device of a second, carried aircraft. The system further includes a retrieval device positioned to support the carried aircraft for detachment from the capture line.

摘要: Embodiments of a system and method for carrying an aeronautical or launch vehicle to altitude for release to flight are disclosed. The system may comprise a multiplicity of mounting elements configured to be affixed to a carrier aircraft in distributed fashion along a mounting axis. Each mounting element may include a cradle and a retention strap. Each retention strap may be suspendedly attached to a respective said cradle, and actuatable from a retention configuration to a release configuration. The retention configuration may enable the retention straps to clampingly secure the vehicle to the respective cradles. The actuation of the retention straps from the retention configuration to the release configuration may disable the clamping securement and thereby release the vehicle to drop away from the cradles. For one or more of the retention straps, the actuation may be by way of detonating at least one corresponding pyrotechnic fastener.

摘要: A system for deploying and retrieving a parasite aircraft includes a parasite aircraft with a dock and a carrier aircraft that includes a maneuverable capture device tethered to the carrier aircraft via a cable. The maneuverable capture device includes a plurality of rotors and is configured to dock in the dock of the parasite aircraft. A method of deploying a parasite aircraft includes positioning a parasite aircraft on a loading surface; positioning a carrier aircraft above the parasite aircraft; releasing, from the carrier aircraft, a maneuverable capture device comprising a plurality of rotors; securing the maneuverable capture device to a dock positioned on the parasite aircraft; lifting, via a cable secured at a first end to the carrier aircraft and at a second end to the maneuverable capture device, the parasite aircraft with the carrier aircraft; and releasing the parasite aircraft from the maneuverable capture device.

摘要: A system for refueling has a boom having a rigid portion and, extendible portion and a fuel nozzle at an end of the extendible portion, the fuel nozzle mates with a port on an aircraft. Control circuitry in the tanker aircraft has input elements by which an operator controls actuators moving the boom left, right and up and down, and a first imaging device proximate the end of the extendible portion of the boom, capturing images and transmitting the captured images to the control circuitry, where the images are displayed on a monitor visible to the operator. The operator controls extension and attitude of the fuel nozzle at the end of the extendible portion, according to the images displayed, mating the fuel nozzle with the refueling port, and transferring fuel from the tanker aircraft to the aircraft to be refueled.
