A jack for lifting segments of a structure includes a pair of masts, a mast base, a mast cap, a hydraulic ram, a bottom bracket and a shuttle. The masts are identical and upright with a plurality of evenly spaced holes. The mast base supports the mast and the mast cap receives the upper ends of the masts and maintains the masts in a parallel, relationship. The hydraulic ram moves between a retracted position and an extended position with a stroke distance which is significantly less than the mast height. The bottom bracket is removably pinned to the masts and receives and supports the lower end of the hydraulic ram. The shuttle receives the upper end of the hydraulic ram. The bottom bracket and shuttle, when not pinned to the masts, can slide vertically up the masts. The shuttle includes features for connecting to a segment of a structure.

This invention includes a brake system for a hydraulic ram or another cylinder, that can be employed as an emergency brake for a lifting elevator. When actuated, the brake arms contact the ram circumferentially to slow and stop the falling ram. The brake arms are preferably lined with an able material that frictionally engages the ram to stop the downward motion of the ram. The brake system may be actuated by loss of hydraulic pressure, by an electronic signal from a hydraulic pressure detector, by down overspeed sensor or by an uncontrolled down motion detector. According to another aspect of the present invention, a controller, which is preferably a programmed control system, compares the actual motion of the elevator as sensed by a detector to a desired motion. Under certain conditions, if the actual motion differs from the desired motion, the controller actuates the brake.

The apparatus is adapted for use in a wide range of building constructions, such as those using slipforms, wherein heavy loads are positioned by the jacking apparatus. The apparatus includes gripping elements having portions engaging elongated structural elements for effecting desired movement of the jacking apparatus in moving the load. The gripping elements are mounted on parallelogram linkage supports for maintained parallel relationship to the longitudinal extent of the elongated structural element with which they are selectively engaged. A control device is carried by the respective upper and lower gripping devices for effecting automatic control of the gripping elements in effecting a lowering of the apparatus when desired. The control is arranged to effect a sequential releasing and gripping of the elongated structural element by the gripping elements as an incident of individual movement of the respective gripping devices.

A hydraulic jack, suitable for use as an outrigger support for a mobile crane, has a cylinder with a piston slidably received therein. Projecting from the piston is a rod that extends axially outward of the cylinder for supporting a load. The rod is externally threaded and a worm wheel nut is internally threaded to fit upon the rod. The nut is held in a fixed, axial position relative to the cylinder, and this nut must rotate on the rod to enable the rod to travel inwardly or outwardly of the cylinder. A rotatable worm is threaded to mesh with worm engaging gear teeth on the periphery of the worm wheel nut. Preferably, the thread on the worm has a helix angle with a self-locking characteristic, but the helix angle of the threads between the worm wheel nut and the piston rod is greater than the angle of friction so that there are no self-locking characteristics. The worm is driven by a hydraulic motor, that is connected with the cylinder in a hydraulic circuit, and a common control valve regulates the operation of both the cylinder and the motor.
