A power unit includes a frame having a handle with a control knob, and a pair of pivotal lift arms elevated by pushing the rearward ends by a push bar of a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder has a control valve attached to a control shaft extending from the control knob. A pair of guide rail are attached to the bottom of the frame; and a pair of rack bars are slidably mounted on each guide rail, and has a forward end pivotally linked to the push bar. A pair of dogs are positioned above the rack bar, each having a rearward end pivotally attached to the frame and a forward end engaging a tooth of the rack bar. The forward end of each dog engages the rack bar as the lift arms are elevated; and in the event of a hydraulic failure, the dogs lock the lift arms in the elevated position. A release includes a cam tube having a V slotted opening in the underside thereof. A swing plate has a cam follower stud slidably engaged within the V slotted opening. The swing plate includes linkage that is actuated by rotation of the control knob. An initial rotation of the control knob automatically rotates the cam tube to release the dogs, and further rotation opens the valve to lower the lift arms.

A jacking system is disclosed in which a hydraulic jack, having a raisable piston, is used, in combination with a jack stand having a raisable support column, to raise a load. In a preferred embodiment, the support column has two components that may telescope into each other and that may be held in fixed position by two ratchet mechanisms. The jack stand is configured so that, when the hydraulic jack is positioned alongside the jack stand, the piston of the hydraulic jack is able to interact with and raise the support column along with the load.

A method is provided for controlling a vehicle lifting device, having at least two, preferably moveable, lifting columns (1-4), which are controlled wirelessly. When a switch is activated for raising or lowering the lifting device, a corresponding signal is transmitted wirelessly to the lifting columns (1-4) and additional signals, which are representative of the individual lifting movements, are transmitted to a control device (5). In the case of unacceptably high movement differences between individual lifting columns, the normal operation is stopped. Here, it is essential that for monitoring the wireless signal transmission, the control device (5) exchanges control signals with the lifting columns (1-4) continuously, and the reception of these control signals is monitored at least in one direction.

The frictional force between the rod and the bearing faces of the clamping jaws as well as between the guide faces of the clamping jaws and their associated guide tracks in the housing, as well as the angle of inclination of the guide tracks are such that, in operation, self-locking occurs. The clamping action of the clamping jaws may be released only by moving the servo piston.
