The fine RDX particles improve performance, boosterability, and sensitivity. The inclusion of AP greatly improves air blast by adding oxygen to the reaction and insuring complete combustion of the ingredients. The aluminum extends the pressure pulse. The ratio of materials is formulated to obtain the lowest known processing temperature.

The invention relates to a low-vulnerability explosive munitions element comprising a casing containing a multicomposition explosive charge, the innermost layer of which is a composite explosive comprising a filled polyurethane or polyester polymer matrix, the filling of which contains more than 20% by weight of organic nitrate explosive, and the peripheral layer of which is a pyrotechnic composition of the family of composite solid propellants comprising a filled polyurethane or polyester polymer matrix the filling of which contains at least one mineral oxidant and less than 17% by weight of organic nitrate explosive. The blast and/or bubble effect produced is close to that produced by the much more-vulnerable charge of monocomposition composite explosive of equivalent mass. The invention also relates to a method for obtaining a blast and/or bubble effect by releasing in the casing of an aforementioned munitions element according to the invention, and then rupture of the casing. The release of gas is obtained by detonation of the innermost layer and then reaction without detonation of the peripheral layer.

Non-cap sensitive aqueous gel explosives containing no suspended solid fuels are made by combining water, hexamethylenetetramine, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium perchlorate and nitric acid, along with sufficient polysaccharide gum to thicken the mixture. These explosives are rendered cap sensitive by mixing therewith paint grade aluminum powder or other conventional sensitizing agents. According to a preferred procedure, a cap sensitive aqueous gel explosive is made by a procedure in which nitric acid and aqueous hexamethylenetetramine solution are first combined under controlled conditions of temperature and pH and ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium perchlorate, thickening agent and aluminum powder are added in controlled amounts in a specified order. The products possess cap sensitivity, even at temperatures as low as minus 23.degree.C.
