Acid-curable resin compositions are described which comprise a mixture of a furan resin and a minor amount of an acid-curable epoxy resin. The acid-curable resin compositions may contain other components such as catalysts, solid particulate materials, etc. The procedures for curing such acid-curable resin compositions as well as methods for forming shaped, filled bodies such as sand cores and molds also are described. Sand cores and molds produced in accordance with the method of the invention exhibit good compression strength, good chemical resistance and increase resistance to stress cracking.

Foundry sand mixes comprising a mixture of sand, binder, and hydrogen peroxide are improved with respect to bench life by the addition thereto, at the time of initial preparation of the mixture, of non-catalyzing amounts, but stabilizing amounts, of certain iron chelating agents which are acid or salts of acids selected from those which, in their free acid form, have an acidic pH less than 3.0 when dissolved at 1 percent weight per weight in water or when saturated in water, whichever is lower in concentration.

In making carbon bodies for lining aluminum reduction cells, an aggregate including carbon recovered from used linings of such cells is mixed with binder material incorporating an alkaline-catalyzable furan binder. Residual contaminant material in the recovered carbon acts as a catalyst for the furan binder, so that the binder-aggregate mixture constitutes a self-hardening carbon lining body.

Novel thermosetting, solvent-based, crosslinkable and chain-extendable coating compositions are provided. The coating compositions are suitable to be formulated as high solids coating compositions and comprise bis-diene oligomers, bis-dieneophile oligomers, crosslinking agent, organic solvent and, preferably, catalyst. The composition cures at elevated temperature to provide a coating on a substrate, such as sheet steel or the like, which is highly resistant to corrosion, humidity and solvents and provides corrosion protection for the substrate.
