A furan polymer impregnated wood which comprises wood impregnated with a polymerizable furfuryl alcohol monomer mixture containing at least water and furfuryl alcohol, and an initiator selected from the group consisting of anhydrides, acids and combinations thereof is described. For longer storage life, the mixture contains a stabilizer selected from sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, phosphates and water-soluble lignin derivatives such as calcium and ammonium salts of lignosulfonic acids, and combinations thereof. A method for preparing a furan impregnated wood and uses thereof is also described.

A resin composition useful in well completion and remedial methods having improved flexibility upon setting or curing is disclosed. The resin composition includes a polymerizable resin, an oil soluble acid catalyst capable of causing polymerization of the resin at formation temperatures, and 10 to 70% by volume rubber. The rubber may be in the form of ground rubber or an aqueous dispersion or emulsion. Also disclosed are methods for the use of the resin composition in well completion and remediation.

Acid-curable resin compositions are described which comprise a mixture of a furan resin and a minor amount of an acid-curable epoxy resin. The acid-curable resin compositions may contain other components such as catalysts, solid particulate materials, etc. The procedures for curing such acid-curable resin compositions as well as methods for forming shaped, filled bodies such as sand cores and molds also are described. Sand cores and molds produced in accordance with the method of the invention exhibit good compression strength, good chemical resistance and increase resistance to stress cracking.

The tensile strength and core hardness of a sand mold or core is increased by incorporating into a mixture of a thermosetting acid-hardenable resin and sand, a dialkyl ester of the formula:R.sub.1 OOC(CH.sub.2).sub.n COOR.sub.2wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, which may be the same or different, are selected from alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms and n is 2, 3 or 4. The ester may be added directly to the resin or sand, or in conjunction with the acid catalyst. Ferric chloride together with the dialkyl ester provides a sulfur-free catalyst for polymerization of the resin.
