A coating composition is now provided which can have a great number of desirable coating characteristics, when the composition is applied and cured on a metal substrate. Moreover, the coating composition has applicability to a great variety of metal substrates. Such substrates include base metal such as steel as well as metal coated substrates such as zinc electroplated steel. Furthermore, the coating compositions can be useful when applied to substrates sensitive to elevated cure temperature, e.g., annealed steel. In one important aspect the composition can contain hexavalent-chromium-providing substance in mixture with cobalt compound. Particulate metal may be present in the composition. A composition furthermore most desirably contains a special organic acid/alcohol reducing agent combination for the hexavalent chromium. The composition can provide a low-cure coating on a metal substrate, which can then translate into higher production line speeds as when used for coating of metal coils.

A chromium-containing coating composition, also containing pulverulent metal, will provide a coating of excellent corrosion resistance when the composition contains urea as at least a part of the reducing agent, and when the composition also contains particular pH adjusting agent. The reducing agent of the composition is used in regard to the hexavalent chromium contained in the chromium portion of the composition. The pH adjusting agent should be a compound of zinc. In addition to achieving excellent corrosion resistance, resulting coatings can provide the other desirable characteristics for coated substrates, such as topcoat adhesion and formability, without deleterious effect.

Coating compositions, for application to metal substrates prior to painting of the substrate, are formulated with special particulate zinc which is very finely divided, e.g., containing virtually no particles having size greater than microns. Such pre-paint compositions on metal substrates offer excellent coating adhesion to subsequently applied paint.
