    摘要: A coring apparatus permitting the taking of a non-rotating core sample and testing of same, as by NMR, prior to breakage and ejection from the apparatus. A core barrel is suspended from a rotating outer sleeve by one or more bearing assemblies which permit the core barrel to remain stationary during rotation of the sleeve with attached core bit for cutting the core. A core test device is fixed with respect to the core barrel on the outside thereof to test the core as it proceeds through the barrel. The apparatus optionally includes a directional detecting device such as an inclinometer and a compact set of circumferentially-spaced steering arms for changing the direction of the apparatus during coring.

    摘要: A soil sampling measuring device for collecting and measuring samples of soil for testing the volatile organic compounds in the soil. The soil sampling device includes a tactile indication of the volume of soil collected in the sampling device so that a person using the soil sampling device can determine when a desired volume of soil is collected in the soil sampling device without the need to refer to a visual scale. The soil sampling device includes a barrel and a plunger in the barrel, with at least one of the plunger and the barrel adapted to provide a change of resistance between the plunger and the barrel when the plunger is extended or retracted through the barrel which provides a tactile indication to the user of the soil sampling device that the plunger has reached a desired volume within the barrel. For example, the barrel of the device may include a rib or groove which respectively increases or decreases the friction between the plunger and the inner surface of the barrel. In preferred form, the plunger includes a shaft with a piston on one end and a handle on an opposed end from the piston and extends through one end of the barrel such that the piston frictionally engages the inner surface of the barrel. Alternately, the shaft of the piston may include either a rib or a groove which increases the resistance or decreases the resistance, respectively, between the shaft of the piston and the end wall of the barrel to provide a tactile indication of the position of the piston within the barrel.

    摘要: An NMR device is presented that includes a drill collar having non-rotating sleeve containing permanent magnets. The non-rotating sleeve is clamped against a borehole wall and decoupled from drilling vibrations during NMR measurements. The transmitter and receiver are located on the rotating part of the drill collar. Alternatively the permanent magnets and the RF receiver antenna and/or receiver electronics are placed on the non-rotating sleeve which is clamped against the borehole wall and decoupled from drilling vibrations, with the transmitting antenna located on the rotating drill collar. Alternatively a non-rotating stabilizer is provided above or below an NMR sensor. A stabilizer is activated to stabilize the rotating NMR sensor located on the drilling collar in the bore hole. The permanent magnets and receiving and transmitting antennas are located on a non-rotating sleeve that is clamped against the borehole wall to decouple the permanent magnets and receiving and transmitting antennas from drilling vibrations.

    摘要: Formation drilling cuttings are centrifuged and a sediment sample is extracted and heated to burn off surface hydrocarbons. A non-fluorescing diluant is added to the sediment. The sediment is then subjected to UV excitation. Depending upon the permeability of the sediment, the speed at which emitted fluorescence brightens is found to vary. The time and brightness of the emission are measured. The time/brightness relationship is proportional to the permeability of the cuttings and can be used to calculate a relative permeability index for comparison to other know parameters to determine the presence of hydrocarbon and the likelihood of being able to produce the hydrocarbon from a wellbore.

The process having the steps of: (a) treating the subsurface formation to mobilize the organic contaminants, such treating of the subsurface formation including withdrawing from the subsurface formation a liquid stream and a vapor stream, the liquid stream containing water, dissolved carbonaceous material and non-dissolved carbonaceous material, (b) separating the liquid stream into a first liquid stream component comprised substantially of water and soluble carbonaceous material and a second liquid stream component comprised substantially of non-soluble carbonaceous material, (c) testing the first liquid component stream to determine Cd, where Cd is the amount of carbonaceous material in the first liquid stream component produced per unit of time by the treating of the subsurface formation in step (a), (d) testing the second liquid stream component to determine Cn, where Cn is the amount of carbonaceous material in the second liquid stream component produced per unit of time by the treating of the subsurface formation in step (a), (e) testing the vapor stream to determine Cv, where Cv is the amount of carbonaceous material in the vapor stream produced per unit of time by the treating of the subsurface formation in (a), (f) determining Cg, where Cg is the quantity of carbonaceous materials in the vapor stream produced per unit of time by the treating of the subsurface formation in step (a), which is attributable to carbonaceous material in the subsurface formation other than the organic contaminants, (g) computing Cc, where Ce=Cs+Cn+Cv−Cg, and (h) controlling the treating of the subsurface formation in step (a) using Cc.

    摘要: A device for preserving the orientation of a core is described. A core barrel is attached to a rotatable orienting rod. A plurality of projections are located on an inner surface of the core barrel. Three projections are grouped together and opposite from a fourth projection. A ratchet assembly is included at an end of the rotatable orienting rod opposite from the core barrel. The ratchet assembly includes a first body, to which the rotatable orienting rod is attached, a plate, a second body, and a biasing mechanism. A turning rod is mounted on the plate, which is located between the two bodies. The plate and the second body each have teeth which intermesh, but which slip if a clog in the core barrel inhibits rotation of the rotatable orienting rod.

    摘要: A sample module is provided for use in a downhole tool to obtain fluid from a subsurface formation penetrated by a wellbore. The sample module includes a sample chamber carried by the module for collecting a sample of formation fluid obtained from the formation via the downhole tool, and a validation chamber carried by the module for collecting a substantially smaller sample of formation fluid than the sample chamber. The validation chamber is removable from the sample module at the surface without disturbing the sample chamber. A sample chamber is also provided that includes a subtantially cylindrical body capable of safely withstanding heating at the surface, following collection of a formation fluid sample via the downhole tool and withdrawal of the sample chamber from the wellbore, to temperatures necessary to promote recombination of the sample components wihtin the chambers. Additionally, the body is equipped so as to be certified for transportation. At least one floating piston is slidably positioned within the body so as to define a fluid collection cavity and a pressurization cavity, whereby the pressurization cavity may be charged to control the pressure of the sample collected in the collection cavity. A second such piston may be provided to create a third cavity wherein a buffer fluid may be utilized during sample collection. Metal-to-metal seals act as the final shut-off seals for the sample collected in the collection cavity of the body. A method related to the use of the sample module and sample chamber described above is also provided.
