Fluid motor and drill apparatus is supported in the casing, with the drill extending below the lower end of the casing to drill the bore hole in advance of the casing. For subsea drilling operations, the casing is suspended from a riser housing which lands on a subsea base, and the running pipe is released from the riser housing to enable retrieval of the motor and drill assembly. Plural motors are employed for drilling large holes.

    摘要: A rotary air percussion drill bit which has a cylindrical body portion with first and second ends. A flat bottom face comprises one end with a shaft attached to the remaining end. A plurality of hard inserts is mounted in the body portion and projects downwardly from both the body portion and from the flat bottom face. The rotary air percussion drill bit has a first chip clearance means formed into the body portion longitudinally along its side wall with a second chip clearance formed around the side wall intermediate the first and second ends. The improvement in the rotary air percussion drill bit provides for a vertical slot which cuts through the drill base down the drill body and forms an arcuate terminus tapered to the cylindrical wall to the drill bit. A gauge tooth is mounted in the arcuate terminus at approximately 20.degree. to 35.degree. with a line normal to the axis of the drill bit. An additional improvement comprises an obtuse angle chip clearance storage region which is disposed between the first and second set of gauge teeth and is formed by a deep cut into the side of the drill bit and around the periphery of the drill bit. The side walls of the cut form an obtuse angle having a short side facing downwardly toward the flat face of the drill bit and a long side tapering up toward the first set of gauge teeth. A second set of gauge teeth is mounted around the short side of the chip clearance storage region. Opposite the short side is a second beveled edge which provides additional chip clearance. Both beveled edges protect the body of the drill against wear, thereby providing longer support to the carbide or hard inserts and extending thereby the life of the drill bit.

    摘要: A fatigue resistant anvil bit is described for use on a percussion rock drill. The anvil bit has a shank having a substantially uniform cross section terminated in a threaded end portion. A bit head is threadably mounted on the end portion having a diameter substantially greater than the bit shank. An anvil ring is shrunk fit on the shank engaging the bit head to provide lateral support and minimize the creation of fatigue fractures.

    摘要: Knife edged cutting members on the conical face and cylindrical side of a rotating drilling head shear slivers of rock by exceeding the tensile strength of the formation being penetrated. Fluid such as air, water, or drilling mud, injected through ports in debris channels between cutting members direct such slivers and other debris upwardly for scouring the bottom of the hole to minimize debris interference with knife edge action. Cutting members are made from a very hard composition such as titanium diboride, boron carbide, boron, and/or mixtures of such hard materials. Guiding members having greater toughness than the cutting members may account for less than one fourth of the wearing surface abraded by the bottom of the hole. Near the bottommost tip, there are fewer cutting and guiding members than at the upper zone of the conical portion. At one or more locations several diameters above the bottom most vertical cutting members there are a plurality of sets of cutting members defining a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the lower most vertical cutting members. Such undersize cutters help to correct minor departures from true verticality, but are inoperative so long as truly vertical drilling continues. In the method of drilling, the conically arranged knife blades rotatingly cut in a manner which maintains straightness notwithstanding variations in the formations through which the drill is penetrating. The true gauge of the hole is achieved by the lower most cylindrical cutting members. In the event of any slight departure from verticality, the supplemental cutting members designed to be under the gauge of the hole and to cut only in the event of a slight departure from verticality, serve to restore truly vertical cutting. Much horse power can be applied to the flow of the drilling mud which is used for scouring the surface scheduled for cutting. Hence each cutting member encounters a substantially clean surface substantially free from the debris from previous cuttings.

As an alternate embodiment, the first portion of the drill may include an auger, the drill and the auger being formed from a flat stock.
