    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a drill bit may include inserting an attachment end of a journal portion into a cavity of a blade portion. The journal portion includes the attachment end; a journal end opposite from the attachment end; and a journal on the journal end extending downward and radially outward from a longitudinal axis of the journal portion. The blade portion includes the cavity extending a distance into the blade portion; and at least one blade extending along the blade portion from adjacent to the cavity to a gauge region of the drill bit. Then, the method includes attaching the journal portion to the blade portion and mounting a roller cone to the journal.

    Abstract: An earth boring bit with sealed cutter bearings has lubricant flow passages which extend from an interior cavity of the bit body to spaces located between bearing shafts and rotary cutters. A lubricant compensator has an elongate body defined by a tube which has a first end disposed in one of the flow passages and a second end which extends into the interior cavity. A piston is initially disposed in the second end, biased to apply pressure to lubricant located in the flow passages. The first end has a section for receiving the piston when lubricant is expelled from within the tube. Apertures extend through a sidewall of the tube, spaced apart from the section in the first end and in fluid communication with the flow passages. The apertures, the flow passages, and the spaces located between bearing shafts and rotary cutters are sized for passing drilling fluid.

    Abstract: An assembly of a rotatable cutting tool and a tool holder is provided. The rotatable cutting tool includes a cutting tool body having a head portion at an axial forward end and a collar portion axially rearward of the head portion, and a shank portion axially rearward of the collar portion. Also included is a cap member positioned on the cutting tool body wherein the cap member has a base portion and a hard cutting tip affixed to the base portion. The tool holder includes a tool holder body containing a bore having a forward end and a rearward end. The rotatable cutting tool is rotatably retained in the bore of the tool holder body. In one aspect, the shank portion of the rotatable cutting tool is received in the bore of the tool holder body and means for lubricating the shank portion of the cutting tool body is provided. In another aspect, means for securing the cap member to the head portion is provided, for example magnetically securing the cap member to the head portion. In another aspect, means for preventing rotation of the cap member relative to the head portion is also provided.
