Fuel pellets fall in downward onto the primary grate; intake air flows in upward through the primary grate; exhaust gas flows out rearward through the exhaust grate. The primary grate supports unburned fuel pellets and permits partially burned pellets to fall through. Multiple vertical passages through the primary grate are each deeper than they are wide. The secondary combustion chamber has a secondary grate. Partially burned pellets fall in downward onto the secondary grate; intake air flows in rearward, through the secondary grate, and out upward into the primary combustion chamber. The secondary grate supports partially burned pellets and permits ash to fall through downward into the ash receptacle. Intake air flows rearward into the ash receptacle and upward into the secondary combustion chamber.

Specifically, a control first signal is produced to activate the appliance, which control first signal is delivered to a first logic circuit for activating the igniter, and to a first delay circuit which produces a second signal delayed from the first signal by a first predetermined time period. The second signal is delivered to a gas supply valve control circuit to open the supply valve, whereupon a detector produces a third signal in response to opening of the valve. A second delay circuit produces a fourth signal delayed from the third signal by a second predetermined time period, the fourth signal being applied to the first logic circuit for deactivating the igniter a predetermined time period after the opening of the gas supply valve.

Through employment of an oxygen concentration cell type sensor (25), by setting the burner to be at a low air/fuel ratio (rich air/fuel mixture), ignition performance has been improved, while simultaneously, through utilization of the fact that the sensor electromotive force is large during a low air/fuel ratio, it is made possible to detect the ignition of the burner quickly and positively.In addition, it is so arranged that voltage is applied to the sensor (25) from outside, so that, by utilizing temperature characteristics of the internal resistance of the sensor (25), misfire of the burner is positively detected.

Disclosed is a fail safe burner control system with a valve controller for operating a burner, a flame rectification flame detector and a spark igniter apparatus. A first electronic switch opens the valve and starts the igniter. Upon the occurrence of flame, a second electronic switch, in response to the rectification detector, disables the first switch thus stopping the spark, but holds the valve open as long as flame is sensed. If flame is lost, the first switch is enabled automatically. In the event of failure to reignite after a loss of flame, the continued operation of the sparking igniter causes a circuit breaker to lock out the system.

The present invention has an inner and outer hull spaced apart, so that burner intake air may flow between the inner and outer hull. The inner hull has the burner mounted in the bottom in a known manner with an air intake port placed below the burner. A burner ring is mounted above the burner to control the air drafts around the burner. On the inner hull one or more barometric draft valves are placed above the burner. As the air pressure rises, due to increasing wind speed, gas pressure, etc., the barometric valve opens automatically, providing more air to feed the flame and reducing the draft under the burner, thereby preventing the flame from being blown out. In extreme locations, more than one barometric draft valve can be provided. The valves can be set to open at different pressures, allowing for an even greater range of operating conditions.
