The position of a cross arm 6 in a distance A is determined by means of the measuring probe 20 and is passed on over an amplifier 22 to a computer 25 for control and display purposes. The coordinate measuring machine operates with only one length scale 5. A stylus (15) for contacting a workpiece (13) to sense its position is suspended on a movable member (16) within a fixed housing (10). The suspension is by means of three connecting units (20, 30, 40). Taking the connecting unit (20)as an example, the movable member (16) is connected to an intermediate member (22) by a first pair of links (21), while the intermediate member (22) is connected to the fixed housing by a second pair of links (23). The pairs of links are rigid in tension and compression so as to prevent rotation of the stylus about a respective one of the three orthogonal axes X, Y, Z. Nevertheless, the links permit translational movement along all three axes. The similar connecting units (30, 40) likewise permit translation on all three axes, while preventing rotation about a respective one of the axes. The use of two pairs of links (21, 23) with a rigid intermediate member (22) is equivalent to the use of a much longer single pair of links without such an intermediate member, and therefore facilitates a more compact construction of the probe for a given range of translational displacement of the stylus (15).

These constant load springs (8) and (8) are solidly secured at the ends at one side to shock absorbers (20) and (20) provided at the end portions of the guide rail (4) and connected at the ends at the other side to a pair of retractors (27) and (27) provided in a support (10) of a measuring element support member (9), and the constant load springs (8) and (8) can be suitably extended or wound by following movements of the measuring element support member (9), so that adhesion of oil to the surface of the scale (7) and the like can be effectively prevented, thus enabling to secure the stable measuring accuracy.

The varying forces due to travel of a probe mounting carriage (24) create vertical displacements of the bearings and movement of the bridge (12) out of alignment. To compensate for this, and thus enable high accuracy measuring, a chain (34) moves with the bridge (12), rotating a spindle (42) at one end of the machine, and thus moving the legs (22) at that end so levers (48) and pivot blocks (52) vary the height of the bridge (12).

A roundness measuring machine is described which measures the position of the surface of an object as the object is rotated on a turntable. The machine determines the circle which is the best fit to the measured points and converts the measurements to distances from the best fit circle. An improved algorithm for determining the best fit circle is used in place of the limacon fit. Calculated differences between the measured surface position and the best fit circle are corrected for the effect of measuring the difference in the direction towards the center of rotation of the turntable instead of in the direction towards the center of the circle. Data values are calculated representing points at equal angles around the center of the best fit circle rather than equal angles around the center of rotation of the turntable. The improved accuracy of correction allows the machine to tolerate greater eccentricity of the workplace relative to the turntable, reducing the necessity for accurate centering of the workpiece.

Each centering system includes a pair of pistons which act on the flexural bar in opposite directions. A stop for one piston of each pair is provided, such that the piston bearing against the stop exerts, at least near the state of rest, twice as high a return force as the second piston of the pair. At least two centering systems are provided in order to impart different force/path characteristics to the tracer.

The vertical leg supports at least one beam, and the rod can be moved to any selected point within the space volume defined by the stand by moving the leg, the beam and the rod relative to the base element. At least one vertical leg is mounted relative to the base element so as to be flexurally rigid and non-rotatable about its longitudinal axis; the beam or beams are not non-rotatably and flexurally rigidly connected, so that a yielding structure is obtained. Deformation of the first vertical leg is measured by measuring means, so as to be able to determine deformation of the structure.

The turntable (4) is supported at three points (A,B,P), one (P) of which is fixed and the other two (A,B) of which are vertically movable by motorized jacks. Centering and levelling is achieved automatically by means of a computer (72) which calculates the required horizontal and pivotal movements of the turntable (4) from data obtained by sensing the workpiece surface with a transducer (12).
