The optical domain signal analyzer broadly includes an optical filter for providing wavelength samples of a received optical signal, a dispersive element for receiving the samples and dispersing the samples, and a detector for receiving the dispersed signal and for providing electrical signals representative of the dispersed sample. A preferred embodiment includes a processor for receiving the electrical signal and calculating the characteristics of the spectrum.

An optical heterodyne detection system in accordance with an embodiment of the invention includes two optical receivers for separately measuring the power of an input signal and a local oscillator signal before the signals are combined. The measurements of the input signal and the local oscillator signal are then utilized to enhance the heterodyne signal to noise ratio by removing the intensity noise contributed by the input signal and the local oscillator signal. By measuring portions of the input signal power and the local oscillator signal power and then subtracting out the scaled quantities from the photocurrent measurement during signal processing, the signal to noise of the heterodyne signal is improved beyond that which is accomplished by known balanced receivers.

A multifunctional infrared spectrometer system has an interferometer which receives the infrared beam from a source and provides a modulated output beam on beam paths to multiple spatially separated infrared detectors. A multi-position mirror element mounted at a junction position receives the beam on a main beam path and directs it on branch beam paths to sample positions, with the beam then being directed on the branch beam path to one of the detectors. One of the branch beam paths may include a sample holder at the sample position which can index between a position at which a sample is analyzed, to a reference material position, to a pass-through position for calibration purposes. The multi-position mirror element may also be indexed to direct the beam on a branch path to a fiber optic cable which has a probe at the end of it which may be inserted in a sample fluid or powder to be analyzed, with the reflected light from the probe being directed back on an optical fiber cable to a detector at the spectrometer. The multi-position mirror element may be moved to a position at which the beam is directed on a beam path to and through an integrating sphere to a solid sample, with the reflected light from the sample being directed by the surfaces of the integrating sphere to a detector. A detector may be mounted to detect the light transmitted through the sample to obtain measurements of both reflected and transmitted infrared light at the sample.

A method of spectroscopically analyzing amplitude and phase information of a particular sample (510) is disclosed, comprising providing a femtosecond laser source (502) positioned in an angularly distal relationship to the sample, generating from the laser source a primary light pulse (504) of substantial peak intensity and spectral bandwidth directed at the sample, and providing a reference medium (512) interposed between the light source and the sample, fixed in position with respect to the sample. A portion of the primary light pulse is directed through the reference medium generating a reference second harmonic signal (514) directed at the sample, which propagates collinearly with the primary light pulse towards the sample. A spectrometer (520) is provided, positioned in an angularly distal relationship to the sample and opposing the laser source, to receive second harmonic reflections of the primary pulse and reference signal (516 and 514, respectively) from said sample. The second harmonic reflections received are then analyzed.
