The device and method stir the fluid and particulate mixture for a time during which the viscosity of the fluid changes such that during a first period of the stirring time substantially all the particulate remains suspended in the fluid and during a second period of the stirring time substantially all the particulate settles out of suspension in the fluid. A signal is generated during the first and second periods such that the signal has a characteristic that changes from the first period to the second period to indicate the change in particle carrying ability of the fluid. Other characteristics, including crosslinking time, can also be determined. A test chamber includes interacting projections extending from the inner surface of a cup receiving the fluid and from an axial support extending into the fluid in the cup.

An acoustic viscometer and method for determining both the kinematic viscosity and the intrinsic viscosity of a liquid which includes an acoustic wave generator, a transmitting piezoelectric transducer, a receiving piezoelectric transducer, and a phase-shift detector. The transmitting piezoelectric transducer is positioned so as to be in contact with the liquid and is operably connected to the acoustic wave generator. The transmitting piezoelectric transducer propagates a longitudinal wave of known frequency through the liquid. The receiving piezoelectric transducer is spaced apart from the transmitting piezoelectric transducer and detects the longitudinal wave and a corresponding shear wave propagated through the liquid. The phase-shift detector is operably connected to both the transmitting and receiving piezoelectric transducers and measures the difference in phase between the longitudinal wave propagated by the transmitting piezoelectric transducer and the longitudinal and shear wave detected by the receiving piezoelectric transducer. The difference in phase is used to determine the velocity of the shear wave, and the kinematic and intrinsic viscosities of the liquid in terms of liquid density.

Slurry useful for wire-saw slicing has viscosity adjusted to 400-700 mPa·second at a shear speed of 2/second and of 50-300 mPa·second at a shear speed of 380/second. The viscosity of slurry is measured using a cone and plate type viscometer which can measure viscosity at different shear speeds. Since the slurry sufficiently flows into inner parts of grooves formed in an ingot and consumed for wire-saw slicing due to the viscosity controlled in response to the shear speed, the ingot can be efficiently sliced to wafers or discs.

To heat or cool or temper the upper measuring part (4) at least one heat pump (24), and in particular at least one Peltier block, is provided by which heat can be supplied to or removed from the upper measuring part (4).
