A security element is embedded in a layer composite of plastic material and has reflecting, optically variable surface patterns which can be visually recognized from predetermined observation directions and which are formed from a mosaic of surface elements occupied by optically active structures. A part of the surface pattern is additionally covered by a regularly arranged matrix of unit cells. Each unit cell is occupied by a single elementary surface or a group of identical surface portions that contain optically active structures which are independent of the mosaic of the surface pattern. The arrangement of the elementary surfaces and the surface portions in the matrix form an item of concealed information which is not perceptible to the naked eye, in the form of graphic or alphanumeric characters which however are reproduced in a color photocopy with a color or gray value contrast which is perceptible to the naked eye.

An optical device for a system presenting collimated images through an off-axis spherical concave mirror. An image can be presented to a user with correction of eccentric distortion caused by the off-axis spherical concave mirror without altering the quality of the image. A diffractive mirror is set in the neighborhood of an intermediate image, and preferably a second intermediate image. The extent of the neighborhood is limited by image resolution and, in the neighborhood, the correction by the diffractive mirror does not alter the resolution. The diffractive mirror may include a hologram which may be digital or made of a photosensitive material. A hologram substrate is preferably not planar to operate partly upon the correction, the residual correction being carried out by the hologram. Such a device may find application to an aircraft pilot's visor.

The plurality of lenses is configured to compensate for decentered aberrations and chromatic aberrations. The second reflection-type HOE is a configured to exert power on bundles of rays and to compensate for chromatic aberrations. A light-transmitting plate is sandwiched between the first reflection-type HOE and the second refection-type HOE.

A multi-layer hologram label includes a base layer having a surface on which a number of layers of adhesive materials are coated in a stacked manner. Each layer has a surface on which a pattern associated with a holographic image is formed whereby by sequentially removing the layers, the patterns of the next layers are sequentially exposed for displaying the associated holographic image. The layers of adhesive materials can be replaced by hologram films carrying hologram patterns thereon. By sequentially removing the hologram films, the hologram patterns of the next films are sequentially exposed to display holographic images associated therewith.

A method is provided for producing a holographic optical element that is comprised of at least one primary hologram (as defined herein) and at least one complementary hologram (as defined herein). The holographic optical element is useful as a security device, since it is relatively easily produced and yet is uncopyable in total. Also disclosed are methods for establishing the authenticity of the holographic optical element.
