摘要:
A low-cost technique to improve the performance of optical disk drives is presented. An algorithm is used to decouple electro-mechanical actuators thus compensating for inaccuracies in the control of the actuators. A similar method can be used to decouple the position sensors. Prior art methods treated cross-coupling between focus, tracking and sled control loops as noise and therefore increased the bandwidth of the system, also increasing the cost of the optical disk drive. The present disclosure actively decouples the control loops using a software algorithm to provide better performing optical disk drives. The cross-coupling effects are measured, a decoupling matrix is determined, and the output of the control laws is modified so as to decouple the actuators.

A focus-detecting emitter for a data storage device is provided, such focus-detecting emitter including a first emission zone configured to selectively produce a first electron beam portion, and a second emission zone configured to selectively produce a second electron beam portion. The first electron beam portion generates a first spot on a storage medium and the second electron beam portion generates a second spot on the storage medium such that a position of at least one of the first spot and the second spot is indicative of a focus state of at least one of the first electron beam portion and the second electron beam portion.

A focus control process (S2), a spherical aberration correcting process (S4), and a focus offset adjusting process (S7 to S9) are performed in this order. In the focus control process, an output of a focus error signal obtained by detecting focal point displacement that occurs in a direction of an optical axis of a light beam focused through a two-element object lens is controlled so that the output becomes close to zero. In the spherical aberration correcting process, spherical aberration that occurs with respect to the light beam is corrected. In the focus offset adjusting process, offset of the focus error signal is adjusted. In this way, it is possible to provide a focal point adjusting method and an optical pickup device in which focus control can be performed stably by eliminating the offset.

An optical storage system includes a pickup head for picking up data from a storage medium. Firstly, the maxima of a tracking error signal and runout are obtained in a calibration procedure in a close loop formed by an optical pickup head, a pre-amplifier, a compensator, a band-pass filter and a maximum detector. A calibration factor is then defined and derived by using the obtained maxima and nominal factors of a power amplifier and the optical pickup head of the optical storage system. The path formed by the series-connected band-pass filter and maximum detector is then disabled, while the calculated calibration factor is then stored in the compensator. The optical storage system may operate in a close loop formed by the optical pick head, pre-amplifier, compensator, a power amplifier under a normal operation procedure so that the optical storage system may record or read data onto/from an optical disc under the compensation provided by the calibration factor.

A method, apparatus, and computer readable medium controlling a servo of a recording and/or reproducing apparatus, using a detected header field signal. An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus includes a playback signal detector that detects a playback signal and a track error signal from information recorded on a DVD-RAM disc, as picked up by a pickup. A header field signal detecting circuit detects a header field signal by comparing a sampled playback signal for a signal representing the presence of a header field with a reference level and holding the comparison result for a predetermined period of time to generate the header field signal. Accordingly, a tracking servo can be stably controlled by using a tracking driving signal that is not affected by the presence of a header. Also, in a seek mode, the track error signal can be held based on the header field signal to generate a track count signal that is similarly not affected by the header. As a result, the number of tracks on the DVD-RAM disc can be accurately counted by using the track error signal.

A method for calibrating a center error offset in an optical drive and a control system capable of calibrating the center error offset. The method includes the steps of: controlling a focusing coil to focus on a rotating disk; controlling a tracking coil with different tracking coil control values; measuring and storing the amplitude of a tracking error TE signal and a center level of the center error CE signal responding to each control value; and selecting a largest amplitude of the tracking error TE signal and setting the responding center level of the center error CE signal as an optimal center error offset. Because the calibrating method determines the optimal center error offset by outputting different tracking coil control signals, it considers not only the unbalance of the gains of photo detectors and the optical deviation due to the assembly misalignment, but also the offset in a power drive.

An objective lens drive having an optical axis adjustment function. An objective lens is supported by a lens holder, and the lens holder is supported on a suspension holder by way of a suspension. The suspension holder is supported so as to be rotatable about an axis extending in a direction in which the suspension extends, whereby the suspension holder is supported laterally by means of multilayer piezoelectric elements. When a drive voltage is applied to the multilayer piezoelectric elements, the piezoelectric elements are displaced vertically, whereupon the suspension holder is rotated about the axis, to thus adjust the optical axis of the objective lens.
