摘要: An optical disc drive according to the present invention may be loaded with an arbitrarily selected one of optical discs of multiple types including a first optical disc with grooves and a second optical disc with no grooves. The optical disc drive includes: an optical system for irradiating the recording side of the loaded optical disc 1 with a laser beam; a light detecting section 7, which receives reflected light from the optical disc 1 to generate a first output signal representing the quantity of at least a part of the light reflected from an inside portion of the optical disc 1 and a second output signal representing the quantity of at least a part of the light reflected from an outside portion of the optical disc 1; a spot location control section 10 for shifting the spot location of the laser beam on the optical disc across recording tracks on the optical disc 1; and a disc type recognizing section 13 for determining, by an upper envelope signal of at least one of the first and second output signals, whether the loaded optical disc 1 has grooves or not.

摘要: Optical media having markings that are non-interfering, or substantially non-interfering with readout of data from the optical media are disclosed. The optical media make use of certain formulations of color forming coatings described herein. Protective coatings used to enhance the color forming coatings are also presented. Methods for incorporating the coatings into the optical media are included. In preferred embodiments, the marking is formed in a photosensitive coating that is applied to the optical media, and then cured with a first light. A second light, having a substantially separate band of wavelengths from the first light, is used to image a marking into the coating. The coating is robust to many external influences, such as ambient environmental conditions, and physical wear.

摘要: A method and data storage device are provided that reduce off-track motion due to resonant modes in the storage device. The off-track motion is reduced by sensing movement with a sensor located on a suspension assembly of the storage device. Based on this sensed movement, the sensor generates a signal that is used to drive a control system to minimize the off-track motion.

摘要: The optical servo system for a tape drive that functions to align a read/write head with the data tracks written on a recording surface of a tape by reading optical servo tracks that are formed on the back side of the tape. This process decouples the magnetic recording of data on the recording surface of the tape from the optical servo system which makes use of servo tracks formed on the back side of the tape. The data storage capacity of the tape is increased since the entire recording surface of the tape is filled with data tracks and the precise alignment of the read/write head makes it possible to place the data tracks closer together. Regions of contrasting reflectivity or phase are also provided on a surface of the read/write head to enable the optical servo system to view an image of both the read/write head and the entire back side of the tape to thereby align the movable read/write head with the data tracks.
