摘要: A shock detection device can detect a slight shock without mis-detection of shocks due to noise in a shock sensor signal. The shock detection device is adapted to output a shock detection signal for stopping writing into a disk medium when a shock applied to the disk medium satisfies a prescribed condition. The shock detection device includes a shock sensor that detects a shock applied to the disk medium and outputs a corresponding shock sensor signal, a variable shock detection slice value setting part that sets a threshold for the shock sensor signal based on a position error signal, a shock sensor signal correction part that outputs, as a new shock sensor signal, a signal by removing noise generated in synchronization with writing from the shock sensor signal, and a shock determining part that outputs a shock detection signal when the shock sensor signal exceeds the variable shock detection slice value.

摘要: A method and apparatus for use with a rotating storage device. The rotating storage device includes a storage medium driven to rotate, a head for reading and writing information on the storage medium and a ramped loading mechanism in which the head is stored. In accordance with the method of the present invention, the head is loaded from the ramped loading mechanism onto the storage medium. Next, location information stored in said storage medium via said head is read. A location of the head is then retained for a predetermined period above a track of a region other than a valid storage region of said storage medium after successfully reading the location information.

摘要: Disclosed is a method measuring the height of a magneto-resistive element (MRE) on a padded slider in a disc drive based on a change in the resistance of the MRE. During operation of the disc drive a biasing current is applied to the MRE head. Next a resistance value of the MRE head is calculated by determining the voltage drop across the MRE head. The resistance of the MRE head is dependent upon its temperature. The temperature of the MRE lowers as its proximity to the disc increases, as the cooler disc surface acts as a conduit drawing heat away from the MRE. This measured resistance value is compared to a threshold value. The threshold value is based upon the resistance of the MRE head at a threshold temperature, which corresponds to a specific distance away from the disc surface. If the measured resistance is lower than the threshold resistance the method outputs an indication to a user that the drive is in danger of failing.

摘要: A method of reproducing data and a control device using a controllable dummy read gate. In the method of reproducing data, at least one of a pulse width, a pulse generating location and a number of pulses is controlled so that a dummy read gate is generated. Then, a read gate for reproducing a target sector is generated, and data is reproduced using the read gate. According to the method, the pulse width of the dummy read gate is generated, a location of the defect sector is avoided and error estimation is decreased. Further, in a case where it is determined that the defect sector or signal distortion exists, the read error is prevented by adjusting the pulse generating location of the dummy read gate.

摘要: A method and apparatus are provided for implementing in situ low flyheight warning in a direct access storage device (DASD). For each head in the DASD, a readback amplitude ratio is identified from two different disk radii. The initial ratio value is stored for each head in the DASD. During operation of the DASD, readback amplitude is monitored and an operating readback amplitude ratio is identified from two different disk radii. A change between the initial ratio value and the operating readback ratio is calculated and compared with a threshold value to identify a low-flying slider. A warning is generated responsive to the change value being greater than the threshold value.

摘要: It is desirable to set an optimum bias current of an MR head in accordance with changes in MR head height, the wear difference of an MR element and the characteristics of the magnetic tape. In the present invention, test track 3 is provided in a beginning-of-tape position of a magnetic tape for setting a bias current for each of MR heads 11 and 12. A test signal is recorded on and reproduced from the test track before recording or reproducing data on/from data track 2. After detecting an error rate or a waveform asymmetry, the bias current is set in such a manner as to set the error rate or the waveform asymmetry in a predetermined range. The optimum current value is stored in memory 24, and the stored value is read out to set a bias current in a subsequent recording or reproduction.

摘要: A thinfilm magnetic head for tape drives that enables onsite, real time temperature monitoring of the head-media interface. The head includes a media interface contacting a data bearing surface of the tape. A thinfilm, read-write element and a thinfilm sensor of a thermosensor are positioned on the head-media interface. The thermosensor generates a signal based on the temperature of the media interface. The media interface includes an active island and an optional inactive island positioned transverse to the tape travel path with the read-write element in the active island. The sensor may be placed on the inactive island or on the active island adjacent the read-write element. In one embodiment, a plurality of read-write elements and thermosensors are provided and sensors of the thermosensors are positioned on the inactive island and/or the active island among or between the read-write elements or adjacent an end element.

摘要: The evaluation reference tape includes at least one recess formed on a magnetic recording layer of a magnetic tape by processing the magnetic recording layer. In the method and apparatus for manufacturing the magnetic recording layer, at least one recess is formed on the magnetic recording layer of the magnetic tape by a laser beam or laser beams in a visible region, an ultraviolet region or both which is incident on the magnetic recording layer of the magnetic tape while the magnetic tape is transported in the longitudinal direction. The evaluation reference tape can perform sensitivity correction of a dropout testing apparatus in accordance with a depth or size of a defect of the magnetic tape and evaluation of the recording/replaying system of the magnetic tape without destroying the evaluation reference tape itself. The method and apparatus can efficiently manufacture the evaluation reference tape.
