The object is to raise controller gain while absorbing magnet position dispersion in a motor, and implement rotation control that is resistant to the influence of disturbance. There are provided a spindle motor 3 that performs rotational drive of a predetermined drive object, and a controller 121 that controls rotational drive of this spindle motor 3 by comparing a pulse time in rotational drive of this spindle motor 3 with a predetermined target time and performing feedback; and also provided is a peak filter 122 that compensates control by the controller 121 by varying the target time dynamically so as to suppress the rotation frequency and higher harmonic components thereof contained in the drive current waveform of the spindle motor 3.

A brushless motor has first and second power transistors which form current paths to three-phase windings so as to rotate a rotor. A position detecting part produces a position signal in response to a rotation of the rotor. An activation operation block controls active operation of the first and second power transistors in response to the position signal. The activation operation block includes a starting operation part which comprises an initial phase setting part, phase changing part and a phase correcting part. The initial phase setting part sets an initial phase of drive signals to the three-phase windings in response to the level of the position signal at the timing of a start signal. The phase changing part changes sequentially the phase of the drive signals to the three-phase windings in the positive direction in response to time. The phase correcting part corrects the phase of the drive signals to the three-phase windings in response to the occurrence of the rising and falling edges of the position signal. Therefore, the brushless motor with reduced position sensor can stably start the rotation of the rotor by using one position signal of one position sensor.

A disk drive which can be used in particular under a low temperature environment is disclosed. The drive comprises a spindle motor (SPM) being a fluid dynamics bearing motor, and rotates a disk medium by the SPM. When an ambient temperature of the drive has changed to a low temperature, current consumption by the SPM increases to maintain steady rotation of the drive. When a CPU detects that current consumption by the SPM exceeds a specified value, the CPU restricts a current supplied to a voice coil motor (VCM) such that the total current amount does not exceed a specified maximum current capacity of the drive.

An ex-situ Servo Track Writer (STW) uses a support element that can extend between discs in a stack, and can also retract, permitting a high level of variation in the stack's positioning. The support element preferably has an engagement surface that is wide enough to permit the element to support the actuator throughout the element's range of (rotary) motion. Because the support structure is retractable, it can use low angles of approach like those of hyperbolic-shaped cams, without losing access to the outermost portions of the discs. The support structure may therefore be moved out of the servowriter actuator's path while position data is written to the outermost portions of the data surface.

Currents of sine waveforms can be fed through coils by a relatively small-sized circuit, and thereby, highly dense magnetic storage can be realized with less rotation variations and a driving control circuit of a motor rotating at a low noise level can be provided. A coil of one phase of a three-phase brushless motor is driven with full amplitude at which an applied voltage becomes equal to a source voltage, and a coil of one of other phases is driven with gradually changing voltages so that a current of sine waveform is delivered, and a coil of the remaining phase is driven by feedback control so that a total current flowing through all coils becomes a predetermined current value.

A method and apparatus for varying track recording speed to maximize host-to-tape data transfer rates is presented. Variable data transfer rates of host systems and networks are accommodated by continually adjusting the tape speed to match the tape drive to the host's actual transfer rate. jThe speed of the tape is adjusted according to both the level of data present in the tape drive data buffer and whether the current mode of the drive is write mode or read mode. In the preferred embodiment, when the tape speed is accelerated or decelerated while writing a number of data track pairs to tape, a predetermined number of dummy track pairs are first written to tape at the current speed. On the next write head phase after the speed is increased or decreased as appropriate while the read heads are over the track, a predetermined number of dummy track pairs followed by more data track pairs are written to the tape at the new speed.

The present invention aims to provide a disk drive apparatus in which a pickup is prevented from being overheated. The disk drive apparatus includes a motor for rotating a disk-shaped storage medium, a pickup for reading/writing information from/onto the storage medium, a rotation controller for controlling the rotational speed of the storage medium, and an overheat detector for detecting overheating of the pickup. The pickup is cooled by using an airflow entailed by the rotating storage medium. In the disk drive apparatus, when the overheat detector detects overheating of the pickup, the rotation controller increases the rotational speed of the storage medium, thereby increasing the efficiency of cooling the pickup.

Track mis-registration (TMR) correction is conditionally made in a hard disk drive using servo data in a closed loop servo control scheme, along with one or more alternative sensing schemes when an external shock or vibration occurs. The alternative sensing schemes include measurement of spindle motor speed using a frequency of servo markers read from a rotating disk, voice control motor (VCM) back emf, spindle motor speed back emf, and accelerometer readings. The predicted TMR resulting from the signal generated by the alternative sensing scheme(s) is simulated based upon a model of the disk drive system, and corrections are applied only if the expected TMR due to the disturbances is large enough that application of the corrections using the alternative sensing scheme would be likely to reduce the overall TMR. In one case, actual operation is occasionally performed with and without corrective TMR feedback from the selected sensing scheme(s), and the actual values are compared with predictions from the system model and the results are used to update the system model.

Disclosed is a reel clutch of a tape recorder. A plate spring is positioned between a reel gear and a reel disc of a reel disc assembly which is mounted on a deck of a tape recorder, and a stopper reel is provided on the reel disc to restrain the engaging height of the plate spring so that a torque is generated by the frictional contact between the reel disc and the plate spring, whereby assembly productivity can be enhanced and manufacturing costs can be reduced.
